“When we were graduating, (high school classmates) were making little speeches and saying, ‘Well, I’m going to nursing school, I’m going to join the service, I’m going to get married,’” Parton told USA Today. “When I got up, I said, ‘I’m going to Nashville to be a star.’ There was a lot of laughter, and it kind of embarrassed me, because to me, that was what I was going to do.”
While she said this was painful at the time, she came to realize that her classmates were probably just surprised by her big dreams.
“It was only years later that I realized that, that was just a big dream for a little kid,” she said. “It was not so much of making fun as just a reaction to a big dreamer like that.”
Parton ultimately made all her dreams come true.

“We grew up in the church and my grandpa was a Pentecostal preacher,” Parton told The Christian Post. “So healing and praying and being anointed and all that stuff, that was nothing new to us, ’cause we survived because of our faith in God to get us through and all that. But when that old lady told me that I was anointed, I didn’t know what that was. I was just thinking it was like, olive oil.”
After her mother explained what the woman meant, though, Parton began to reflect on her words. She said the moment stuck with her.
“That triggered a faith in me because I believe that I was supposed to do something good,” she explained. “After she told me that, I thought, ‘Well then this is my responsibility. I’m going to do something good.’”
