Everyone Rumored to Be Contributing to Lil Durk’s Legal Fees
Lil Durk’s federal murder-for-hire trial is still playing out, and his entire life is on the line. The 33-year-old rapper faces a life sentence if he’s convicted of a murder plot that prosecutors claim took the life of Saviay’a Robinson. Simultaneously, he’s dealing with a civil lawsuit tied to the alleged murder. While Lil Durk’s life hangs in the balance, several musicians have stepped in to help fund a defense by what is being considered a true legal “dream team.”
Young Thug said he’s contributing to the defense
While Lil Durk has a team of high-powered lawyers defending him at his murder-for-hire trial, he’s not the one who is footing the bill. Over the last several weeks, rumors have begun swirling that multiple high-profile artists have stepped forward to fund his defense. One contribution is basically confirmed.
Young Thug, in particular, has openly stated that he has been helping Lil Durk with his defense, after rumors swirled he’d had a falling out with his fellow rapper. Young Thug took to X (formerly Twitter) to reveal he sent Brian Steel, a well-known attorney, to help Lil Durk’s defense. He revealed that Steel is working on the case on his dime.
Steel and Young Thug have a long history. The attorney defended Young Thug during his own brush with federal authorities. Young Thug was accused of racketeering, with prosecutors arguing his record label, YSL, was actually a violent street gang and that he was the leader. The case ended with Young Thug walking free after entering a non-negotiated plea deal. He had spent years behind bars leading up to the trial, but walked free the same day a judge handed down his sentence.
Drake and Kanye West are rumored to be backers, too
Young Thug is the only hip-hop artist who has come out publicly and claimed they were paying for Lil Durk’s defense, but rumors are swirling he is not the only one. Drake is rumored to be deeply involved in funding the defense, though he has not confirmed that himself. There is a connection between the two, though. Drake and Durk have a well-documented, years-long friendship and history of collaboration.
According to XXL Magazine, Akademiks revealed that Kanye West is also helping fund the rapper’s very expensive defense. 21 Savage and Lil Baby’s names have been associated with the rumored effort to help cover his legal costs. Akademiks claimed West sent Lil Durk a check for $250,000 to pay his legal team. There is no word on how much 21 Savage or Lil Baby may have contributed. All claims, at this time, are purely rumors, though.
What the Legal Fight Is Actually Costing
Whoever is footing portions of the bill, the overall cost of Durk’s defense is reportedly steep. Some reports have placed his legal spending at around $100,000 per day for his team of attorneys. Legal experts estimate the rapper could shell out more than $2 million on his defense before all is said and done.
It makes sense that the cost would be so high. Lil Durk’s charges are extremely serious and could land him in jail for life. The trial stems from his October 2024 arrest on conspiracy to commit murder. The charges are tied to the 2022 shooting death of Saviay’a Robinson. Robinson was the cousin of rapper Quando Rondo. Prosecutors allege Robinson died during an attempt on Rondo’s life as retaliation for the 2020 death of King Von. Kavon Grant, who worked for Lil Durk, pleaded guilty to arranging the murder. He is said to be cooperating with the prosecution.
Lil Durk’s trial began on August 20 with jury selection. Opening statements were heard on August 24. The trial is expected to last three weeks and should include testimony from several key witnesses, including Grant.
