Prince William made history when he appeared on The Graham Norton Show, becoming the first royal to do so.

In October 2026, the future king was featured on the British comedy talk show alongside Cate Blanchett, Robert Irwin, and Hannah Waddingham, as he promoted his global environmental initiative, the Earthshot Prize. His admission about trying to “push” Travis Kelce out of that famous photo he was trying to get with his children and Taylor Swift is what really had people buzzing.

Kelce later laughed off the comments and said he completely understood, joking, “I was just a boyfriend at that point.”

But there is something else viewers noticed during William’s chat on the red sofa, and Google search engines lit up as many questioned why the royal wasn’t wearing a wedding ring. Searches for Prince William’s wedding ring, or lack thereof, spiked by 5,000%, reaching their highest point in over two years, not just in the UK and U.S., but worldwide.

However, Prince William doesn’t wear his wedding ring, ever. Now an expert is explaining why.

Laura Taylor, who is a jeweler specializing in engagement and wedding rings at Lorel Diamonds, told Showbiz Cheat Sheet, “Prince William not wearing a wedding ring is something people seem to rediscover every few years, but it isn’t a recent change and certainly doesn’t suggest that anything has happened between him and Kate.

“Before their wedding in 2011, it was confirmed that there would only be one wedding ring, in line with both William and Kate’s wishes. Kate received her Welsh gold band during the ceremony, while William chose not to have one at all.”

Taylor continued, “It was explained at the time that William simply wasn’t someone who wore jewelry. He had never worn rings before getting married and apparently didn’t want to start then. So his decision seems to have come down to personal preference rather than any particular royal rule. That fits with how he has always dressed, as William doesn’t even wear a signet ring, despite these traditionally being associated with royal and aristocratic men.”

She added, “His Graham Norton appearance has been praised for showing a more relaxed and approachable side to the future king, and his decision not to wear a ring could be seen as just another small example of William doing things in his own way. Kate does wear her wedding ring, which is a slim band made from Welsh gold given by the late queen. She usually wears it alongside Princess Diana’s sapphire engagement ring.”
