Fashion Designer Says His Dramatic Dispute With Meghan Markle Involved Princess Kate
Meghan Markle‘s return to the U.K. with Prince Harry after living in the U.S. for six years has brought about renewed interest in the Duchess of Sussex. Now, one story that has been circulating all over comes from renowned designer Roland Mouret.
The celebrated French designer has created glamorous pieces for plenty of high-profile names, including Kim Kardashian, Victoria Beckham, and members of the royal family.
Mouret is revealing more about his work over the years in his new memoir I Am Roland Mouret: The Butcher’s Boy Who Dressed the World. In it, he discusses working with the Princess of Wales (formerly known as Kate Middleton) since 2011. One of his most notable creations is the dress the princess wore to the Top Gun: Maverick premiere in 2022.
Mouret also got to know Meghan before she and Harry tied the knot.
According to excerpts from his book published by the Daily Mail, he and the former Suits star met in Turkey in 2015. He recalled, “I said: ‘You don’t know me, but you do know me in a way. I am Roland Mouret.'”
Mouret remembered that Meghan “screamed and laughed, and we chatted for a few moments. I told her that Suits was being very good to me,” referencing how the show’s costume department had featured some of his designs. But after keeping in contact and developing a friendship, they had a blowout when Meghan freaked out on him over a mistake by one of his staffers.
Mouret wrote, “Meghan and Harry’s relationship became public. Then the same team member who had sent clothes for Meghan decided, in an honest attempt to be efficient, to call Kate’s stylist at the Palace and ask for Meghan’s dresses to be returned. Meghan was furious and called me. ‘You don’t realize what you’ve done! You’ve embarrassed me.'”
Mouret claims Meghan rejected his apology, telling him, “You know now I can never wear your clothes again.”
In addressing the conflict, Mouret made it clear, “Meghan’s decision not to wear my clothes was hers, not the Palace’s, not anybody else’s. I don’t think anyone else cared. I didn’t see the logic of that, but I didn’t question it.”
Although Meghan vowed never to wear any of Mouret’s creations again, she did just that when she was spotted sporting one of his dresses in an Instagram promotion for her lifestyle brand, As Ever, just a few months ago.
