Queen Camilla will celebrate her 79th birthday on July 17, and now someone who used to work for the royals is sharing how Camilla has changed since she married King Charles and what simple gift the monarch will give his wife this year, since it’s not a big milestone birthday.

Grant Harrold was King Charles’ butler from 2004 to 2011. During his time working for the now-monarch and Camilla, his duties included valet, housekeeper, house manager, and driver. In 2025, he published his first book, The Royal Butler, which became an Amazon bestseller. He regularly appears on TV offering royal commentary on both current and historic news stories.

Speaking on behalf of Smooth Spins Casino, Harrold told Showbiz Cheat Sheet, “Camilla’s role has completely changed since Charles became king. We’ve seen her come to the forefront and show what a remarkable individual she is. Behind closed doors, she’s very normal and a very down-to-earth person.”

The former royal employee added, “[Camilla] wasn’t born into a royal household, but she has a lot of connections with the aristocracy growing up, and she was brought up in a privileged lifestyle. For her, it wasn’t that difficult transitioning when she married Charles and joined the Royal Family. She’s been a huge support for him.”

Harrold also talked about where the family will celebrate her birthday and how the king will give her a simple but thoughtful present this year, saying, “The royals always celebrate Camilla’s birthday every year. It’s very traditionally held in the garden at Highgrove, depending on the weather. That’s always a regular thing that they do. When it comes to gifts, I think the king will look at giving something in his garden for her. She turns 79 this year, so it’s not a big milestone birthday.”
