The Ghost of Marilyn Monroe Is Rumored to Haunt This Hollywood Landmark
Marilyn Monroe died in 1962. But according to some, her spirit is still with us. A popular urban legend claims that the screen icon haunts the historic Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel in Los Angeles.
Marilyn Monroe lived at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel
A longtime Tinseltown establishment, the Hollywood Roosevelt opened in 1927. Two years later, it hosted the first-ever Oscars ceremony. And over the years, stars such as Clark Gable, Carole Lombard, and Montgomery Clift called the place home. But hotel’s the most famous guest is undoubtedly Monroe – and according to some, she’s still there today.
Monroe stayed at the hotel for two years early in her career. After her tragic death at age 36, stories began to circulate among hotel guests and staff regarding spooky occurrences linked to her former residence.
The most common tale revolves around a full-length mirror that hung in her suite. According to the lore, people have reported looking into the mirror and seeing the reflection of a blonde woman in 1950s attire or a white dress standing behind them. But when they turned around, no one was there.
Eventually, the mirror was moved to the hotel’s lobby near the elevators. But the strange sightings did not stop. Some people have also reported smelling the scent of Monroe’s Chanel No. 5 perfume or feeling cold spots near the mirror. The Niagara star’s ghost has also been seen dancing in the hotel’s ballroom.
Montgomery Clift may also haunt the hotel
Monroe isn’t the only famous guest who is said to haunt the Hollywood Roosevelt. The ghost of Montgomery Clift has also been spotted in room 928, where he stayed while filming From Here to Eternity. Guests have reported the sounds of bugle – the instrument Clift’s character played in the Oscar-winning film.
The actor’s “brooding spirit” also allegedly “turns up the heat and switches on the radio to let guests know he’s around–and still angry about an unfulfilled life,” per the Los Angeles Times. (Clift died in 1966, at age 45, after battling depression and alcoholism following a disfiguring car accident.)
Guests at the Hollywood Roosevelt have also reported seeing a spectral little girl by the hotel’s pool, allegedly the ghost of a child who drowned in the 1930s or 1940s. Others have seen a figure of a man dressed in 1930s-era clothing in various spots in the hotel. His real identity remains unknown.
