When Melissa Johns first joined Grantchester in season 6, she never imagined that the show – and her character, the indomitable Miss Scott – would define her 30s.

After Johns signed on to the cozy British mystery drama  about a crime-solving vicar (which airs as part of PBS’s Masterpiece), she was warned not to “get comfortable” because it was supposedly the show’s final season. And every year the show was renewed, the warning was repeated. So, when the cast were finally told season 11 would be the last go-round for Reverend Alphy Kottaram (Rishi Nair), Detective Inspector Geordie Keating (Robson Green), and the rest of Grantchester crew, they weren’t sure it was really the end.

“When they said that series 11 was going to be the last one, we almost didn’t believe it, which meant it was a little bit harder to let it sink in,” Johns told Showbiz Cheat Sheet.

“I have not known my 30s without Ms. Scott by my side,” she added, referring to her eminently capable police secretary character. “I’ve only known my 30s with her walking alongside me. So this summer’s going to be a strange one.” (Filming on the final season wrapped in November 2025.)

Melissa Johns’ life has been ‘intertwined’ with Miss Scott’s

Miss Scott’s journey has paralleled Johns’ own in some key ways. At the end of season 10, Miss Scott married Detective Constable Larry Peters (Bradley Hall), in a ceremony that ultimately took place in Granchester’s church, not the drab registry office where they initially planned to wed in secret. They filmed the scene just two weeks after Johns’ real-life wedding, which she called an “amazing” twist.

“[Larry and Miss Scott] got a much nicer wedding than the one that they thought they were going to have to endure, which was a not very nice registry office,” she noted. “Thanks to Geordie and the rest of the gang, they got the wedding that they deserved.”

In season 11, Miss Scott and Larry are embracing life as newlyweds and all the change that comes with that, especially her efforts to balance her career with her new role as wife. (So far, only the couple’s friends know about their marriage, which allows Miss Scott – now technically Mrs. Peters – to keep working with the Cambridgeshire Police.) And an even bigger change is on the horizon.

“My life and Ms. Scott’s life have been intertwined for a very long time, especially with me being pregnant throughout filming season 11 and obviously Ms. Scott having some pretty big news herself,” said Johns, who welcomed her first child in late 2025. “So we find [her and Larry] very in love and we find Ms. Scott as headstrong as ever, meaning that when she does find out this pretty big news, she doesn’t know what to do with it.”

‘Grantchester’ series finale will leave an ‘imprint’ on viewers

But whatever life throws at them, the Grantchester family has always been able to lean on each other. As Miss Scott considers what the future holds, she ends up turning to Geordie for some much-needed advice. The heartfelt conversation was easy to bring to life given the cast members’ real-life friendship.

“We are so sort of close and tight-knit as a cast, it just makes those scenes so much easier to do,” Johns said. “Because it’s based in reality and all good acting should be based in reality and truth.”

Whether it’s Geordie offering some fatherly advice to Alphy or Miss Scott, or Leonard’s (Al Weaver) loving (if occasionally fraught) dynamic with Mrs C. (Tessa Peake-Jones), Grantchester highlights the power of found family. It’s those moments of connection that give the show its emotional core. Johns said that when Grantchester does end, viewers will feel that they’re bidding farewell to old friends.

“I think without going too much into story, there is just something that happens at the end,” she said of the series finale, which airs August 2. “There is something that happens that just makes you realize that these characters will always exist in your mind and that just because we’re saying goodbye to them on the screen, it doesn’t mean they have to go anywhere in your mind.”

“Hopefully they’ve left enough of a imprint on viewers and fans so that fans, whenever they want, can grab a cup of tea or a pint and can think, ‘I wonder what Geordie would be doing now. I wonder what Miss Scott and Larry would be doing now.’ I think the end really supports that as a final message.”

Grantchester Season 11 premiered on Sunday, June 14 on PBS Masterpiece on Prime Video, PBS Passport, the PBS app and broadcasting on PBS (check local listings).
