Meghan Markle’s half-brother, Thomas Markle Jr., has apologized for defending their father, Thomas Markle Sr. He claimed that he found suspected child abuse images among his father’s belongings in the Philippines. “I’m so, so sorry Meghan,” Markle Jr. told The Sun. “I now know I have been protecting the wrong person for the past nine years.”

Markle Jr. has mocked Markle on social media and YouTube. He even wore a wig and dress to impersonate her during public rows surrounding her 2018 marriage to Prince Harry. Now, he said he regrets taking their father’s side. “Having seen what I’ve seen, I believe the man I’ve been defending and caring for is a monster,” he said.

Markle Jr. also said he understands why Markle stopped speaking to their father. “I know we’re not close but I can still remember holding you when you were a baby and looking after you when you were small,” he added. “So please accept my apology and know that I wish you and your family all the best for the future.”

According to The Sun, Markle Jr. found the alleged material while looking for a mobile phone among family keepsakes. His father was receiving medical treatment in the United States at the time. Markle Jr. later checked phones, computers, cameras, and DVDs stored in four cardboard boxes. He claimed they contained “hundreds, if not thousands” of suspected child abuse images and videos.

He said they appeared to show children aged 10 or 11 in s–xual acts. “It was my dad’s phone with my number and my sister’s number in the contacts list, but it was contaminated with the worst images I had ever seen,” he said. “It’s the kind of thing you just can’t unsee no matter how hard you try.”

Markle Jr. said he felt horrified and shaken after discovering the material. He decided to report his father. “Every ounce of love or loyalty I had ever felt towards him vanished the second I saw that phone,” he stated. “I decided he must face the full force of the law for the sake of those poor children.” He said he first contacted the FBI because his father had lived in Pennsylvania.

He claimed hotline offered little help. He also said he received no response from the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children or Pennsylvania police. Markle Jr. later retrieved the boxes and asked an IT technician to access three hard drives. “I thought the phone was bad but when the computer guy sparked up the hard drive it was like he’d opened the gates of hell,” he told The Sun.

Markle herself addressed the allegations against her father on October 23. She told Page Six that she was “deeply distressed” and her “thoughts are with any children who may have been harmed.” Markle noted she learned about the allegations against her father back in 2018. The Metropolitan Police later confirmed it received a related letter in January 2019.

The force passed it to Harry and Markle’s office but didn’t share the allegations with other law enforcement agencies. It is reviewing how it handled the matter. Markle also explained why she kept her father away from Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.

“I hope it can now be understood that, despite certain media publications’ distortion over the years, any distance from my father and my choice to not allow him to have contact with our children was for one reason: to protect them,” she said.
