Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s death has shocked and saddened Hollywood and beyond as those who knew him and those who grew up watching him play Theo Huxtable on the TV sitcom The Cosby Show are mourning his passing.
Warner was also known for his roles on Malcolm & Eddie, Reed Between the Lines, and The Resident. He made his mark on music too with two Grammy nominations and one win for Best Traditional R&B Performance for the song “Jesus Children” in 2013.
Warner’s gained attention over the years for his love life as well. Before he was married, he dated actress Michelle Thomas, who also portrayed his girlfriend Justine on The Cosby Show. They split in 1994 but remained friends. Tragically, she died in 1998 from a rare form of stomach cancer and Warner was one of the people by her bedside. He was in a long-term relationship with actress Karen Malina White, who also appeared on The Cosby Show. After their breakup, he dated Regina King for a few years before they called it quits in 2013.

Warner spent time at a residence in Atlanta, but his longtime primary home was in the Studio City section of LA.
Warner purchased that property in 1994 for $470,000. Today, it’s worth more than $2 million. The actor recently rented it out for just under $9,000 a month.
The house is perched on a hillside offering picturesque views of the San Fernando Valley, and the location is close to the bustling Ventura Boulevard. Warner’s abode is nearly 3,000 square feet and features four bedrooms and three-and-a-half bathrooms. The house also boasts large windows for plenty of natural light, hardwood floors, a sleek kitchen with stainless steel appliances, a fireplace in the living room, walk-in closets, balconies, and a private backyard.
New details about Warner’s death
Warner’s death was announced on July 21, 2025. It occurred one day earlier when he was on vacation in Costa Rica with his family.
He was swimming in the ocean at Playa Grande in the province of Limón on the Caribbean coast around 2:30 p.m. local time Sunday, when a current pulled him deeper and further out into the ocean. Other people on the beach at the time sprang into action and tried to save him. However, by the time medical personnel arrived, he was dead. One of the men who jumped into the water to help Warner is now in the hospital and listed in critical condition.
On July 22, the Judicial Investigation Police said in a statement that an autopsy was performed on the actor and the manner of death was classified as accidental, while the cause is “asphyxia by submersion.”
Warner is survived by his wife and his daughter, who was born in 2017. He never publicly shared their names to protect their privacy.
