While the mullet fell out of favor, actors like Jacob Elordi and Paul Mescal are bringing it back to popularity — with a modern twist. The actors have helped popularize the crullet: a cross between a crop and a mullet. Here’s what anyone who wants the look should say to their stylist.

Jacob Elordi and Paul Mescal are popularizing the mullet again

Elordi, Mescal, and a number of other celebrities have worn versions of the soft mullet, which has a short front and longer back. It features tapered sides to shape the cut and a textured top. Hairstylist and Fresha ambassador Andrea Magri recently showcased the crullet at HAIRFEST 2026. The cropped front of the haircut often features a fringe at the forehead, shorter sides, and a back that is reminiscent of a traditional mullet.

Anyone looking to emulate the look should take several elements into consideration before going to the salon. You should determine where you want the fringe to lay on your forehead, and whether you want it to have soft or more defined edges. In addition, you should determine how closely tapered you want the sides, particularly in contrast with the longer back. Finally, decide how much length you want in the back. This might require you to grow your hair a bit before getting the cut.

This look will require some styling at home. Ask your barber what that might look like, and note how much time you are willing to spend on your hair every day. Finally, you will need to determine an upkeep plan. The fringe and sides will likely require more maintenance than the back.
