Jalen Brunson and His Wife Looked Stylish on the Red Carpet but the NBA Star Felt ‘Vulnerable and Exposed’ on Stage
Jalen Brunson and Ali Marks Brunson stopped for a few snaps on the red carpet before the ESPYS got underway at the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center in New York City. The two kept things classic with Jalen rocking a tuxedo, while Ali donned a long black halter dress. At one point, the pair even broke out sunglasses as photographers flicked away.
But as confident as the NBA Finals MVP looked on the carpet next to his wife, an expert noticed that wasn’t the case during the ceremony in which Jalen won multiple awards and gave acceptance speeches.
Inbaal Honigman is a body language expert. She has appeared in the media for more than two decades and offered her expertise for Big Brother’s Little Brother, Elle Magazine, and talkSPORT radio, to name a few.
Speaking on behalf of Casino.org, Honigman told Showbiz Cheat Sheet exclusively, “When Jalen and Ali Brunson walk the red carpet, they project a remarkably balanced partnership. Their arms stay wrapped around each other, and neither attempts to step ahead or steal the spotlight, creating a strong impression of equality.
Honigman continued, “Their facial expressions match, so that when one of them smiles, both of them smile. These mirrored facial expressions reveal a mental alignment between the two, as they match each other’s energy. There’s real compatibility there, as well as a desire to agree and to work together harmoniously.
“The couple’s body language is incredibly even, showing that they’re both very sensitive to the needs and preferences of the other. As they stand side by side, their arms are tucked so tightly around each other that you couldn’t slide a credit card between them. Their show of unity is much more than a show; it is reality.”
However, the expert pointed out that Jalen was a little less confident when he took the stage to deliver his speeches, noting, “As Jalen’s about to start walking towards the stage for his award, his head turns back just briefly, he’s checking out what’s going on behind him, making sure that his other responsibilities are taken care of before he begins his ascent to the stage. This backwards glance lets us know in no uncertain terms that winning awards is not his top priority, and he feels like he should check in, just in case something more important is taking place.
“Hopping up the steps and onto the stage, Jalen shows that he’s feeling a little vulnerable and exposed. His hand on his tummy is protective and comforting because he doesn’t feel completely safe in that moment. When Jalen thanks his family for their sacrifices, his voice audibly cracks with emotion. His lips tighten, and his chin rises to form a thankful expression as he shows his gratitude with his ‘grateful’ face.”
Honigman concluded, “At the end of his speech, Jalen holds his statuette aloft, raising it a fraction towards the audience. What this move conveys is that Jalen feels that it takes a village to create the right conditions for such an award, and he is handing the award to its rightful owners — his support network. The Knicks player feels undeserving of such honor.”
Showbiz Cheat Sheet acknowledges that conditions and cultures can impact body language and is sensitive to all backgrounds.
