Katy Perry Teases Met Gala Return After 3-Year Absence Amid Calls to Boycott
Katy Perry hasn’t attended the Met Gala in three years, but she teased the possibility of a return to the event. Perry has had bold looks at the Met Gala in the past, and her return would likely thrill fans. Her timing isn’t great, though. As she hints at her attendance, many people have called for celebrities to boycott the event due to Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez Bezos’ involvement.

In a recent social media post, Perry asked her fans if they thought she should attend fashion’s biggest night this year.
“Should I go to #TheMet?” she asked fans on X (formerly Twitter).
This year’s Met Gala theme is “Costume Art” with “Fashion is Art” as the dress code. Beyoncé, Nicole Kidman, Venus Williams, and Anna Wintour serve as co-chairs for the event, and Bezos and Sánchez are the primary sponsors and honorary co-chairs.
There are calls for celebrities to boycott the Met Gala
Bezos and Sánchez’s recent wedding drew protesters, and many of the celebrity attendees faced criticism. Their role as sponsors and honorary co-chairs is no different. Throughout New York, “Boycott the Bezos Met Gala” posters began cropping up.
Per The New York Times, activists have been campaigning against the Met Gala. One poster near the Metropolitan Museum of Art read “The Bezos Met Gala: Brought to you by worker exploitation.” This references allegations of worker mistreatment by Amazon, Bezos’ company.
Another poster said the event was “brought to you by the firm that powers ICE.” Amazon announced it would cooperate with ICE on their deportation efforts. They have also sold facial recognition technology to the agency to help their efforts.
While many fans still look forward to seeing their favorite celebrities on the museum’s steps, a growing number of people said they will be disappointed in those who do attend.
She is friends with Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez
It’s possible that Perry is unaware of the backlash, or that she doesn’t care. She is friendly with Bezos and Sánchez, and she went to space with the latter on the widely-mocked Blue Origin flight. While Perry was unable to attend the couple’s wedding due to her tour, she attended Sánchez’s bachelorette party in Paris.
“The atmosphere was very relaxed and very Parisian,” a source told People. “It was a pre-wedding all-girl party for 13.”
Sánchez posted a series of photos from the event. In it, she described the attendees as some of her closest friends.
“Forever starts with friendship, surrounded by the women who’ve lifted me up, illuminated my path in dark times, and shaped my heart along the way,” she wrote on Instagram.
Other attendees include Eva Longoria, Kim Kardashian, and Kris Jenner.
