Russell Brand Thought He’d Become a ‘Better Person’ if He Married Katy Perry
Katy Perry and Russell Brand met in 2008 while filming a scene for the film Get Him to the Greek. Though the scene didn’t make it into the movie, the pair began a whirlwind relationship that resulted in marriage. Brand recently admitted that his only feelings of inadequacy were the reason he married Perry. He said he thought he would become a better person if she were his wife.
Russell Brand and Katy Perry married in 2010
In 2008, Perry made a brief cameo in Get Him to the Greek. From there, she began dating Brand, one of the film’s stars. In 2010, the pair got engaged, and they tied the knot later that year.
Just 14 months later, however, the couple ended their marriage. Perry revealed that she learned Brand wanted a divorce through a text message he sent her shortly before a concert.
“He’s a very smart man, and I was in love with him when I married him,” she told Vogue in 2013. “[But] let’s just say I haven’t heard from him since he texted me saying he was divorcing me December 31, 2011.”
Russell Brand said he thought he would be a better person because of Katy Perry
In a recent interview, Brand said he was responsible for the problems in the marriage. He claimed he looked at Perry as something larger than a person.
“I wanted to grab her like this — kind of, ‘There, got it,’” Brand told Megyn Kelly (per E! News). “I felt like I was inadequate and not enough on my own, so I saw this big, glorious thing, even though I knew her as a person, just a normal person.”
He said he rushed their relationship timeline because of his own insecurities.
“I pushed to get married early because I felt inadequate and insecure and that I wasn’t enough and that if I was married to her, I’d somehow be a better person and more important.”
He added that his expectations “put her under an unnecessary amount of pressure and strain.” He also said that he felt intimidated by Perry’s success, something she said years ago.
“At first when I met him he wanted an equal, and I think a lot of times strong men do want an equal, but then they get that equal and they’re like, ‘I can’t handle the equalness,’” she said. “He didn’t like the atmosphere of me being the boss on tour.”
He recently admitted to sleeping with a 16-year-old girl
Brand currently faces multiple charges of rape and sexual assault in the United Kingdom. He is awaiting trial and denies the allegations made against him. Still, he recently admitted to having sex with a 16-year-old girl.
“The plain fact of it is that in Europe and in the United Kingdom, where I’m from, the age of consent is 16,” Brand told Kelly. “And I did sleep with a 16-year-old when I was 30. But when I was 30, I was a very different person. I was a lot younger, and I was an immature 30-year-old.”
As of this month, six women have come forward with allegations of sexual offences against Brand.
He told Kelly he feels “consensual sex, actually, with a variety of people, when there is a strong power differential, as there is when you’re a famous man who has the ability to attract women like I did at that time — I think [it] involves exploitation. It is exploitative.”
Still, he claimed he is “not guilty” of sexual assault and rape.
