Katy Perry and Justin Trudeau made their red carpet debut at the Tribeca Film Festival on June 9 for the premiere of Katy Perry: The Lifetimes Tour Live From Paris. The pop star and Canadian politician couldn’t keep their hands off each other, and now an expert is sharing exactly what some of their intimate gestures signal.

Darren Stanton is a body language and behavioral expert with a degree in psychology. He previously worked as a police officer and used his expertise to uncover the truth when interviewing hundreds of suspects. He later moved into media and TV as a consultant and has been dubbed the “Human Lie Detector.”

Speaking on behalf of Covers.com, Stanton told Showbiz Cheat Sheet, “The first thing that strikes me is their proximity. In front of the media wall, there are a lot of telling gestures. The eye contact involves a lot of fixed eye gaze, and Justin doesn’t blink.

“This is usually reserved only for people we are emotionally connected to, as it creates deep trust and rapport. The pair have grown so much closer and this is reflected in their PDA. Justin Trudeau turns to her and she reciprocates. They both face each other which indicates deep trust.”

The expert continued, “Katy then puts her hand on her chest which is an intimate gesture and they’re a strong couple. She is comfortable doing that in front of the world and they appear to be in their own little bubble and it’s moving in a deeper depth. Her smile and eye gaze are concurrent with Justin. Her whole face is engaged, and she’s not doing it for the cameras. She is not afraid to be playful with him and she is showing genuine emotion.

“The closer we are to someone, the more we want to be next to them. Over the last few months, it is apparent that this is not a media relationship and they are becoming increasingly closer. The pair truly are in love and potentially could last a long time.”

At the event, Perry participated in a Q&A about her new concert film and gushed over Tradeau, revealing that the Paris show during which the doc was shot “was after I met the love of my life, and so I felt very anchored by that because I’m a little bit like a rainbow kite. I fly super high and like, you know, touch the veil, cosmos, and sometimes I need to be anchored, and so to have that anchor finally makes me feel really whole now.”

Perry and Tradeau first sparked romance rumors in the summer of 2025 following news of the singer’s split from Orlando Bloom, her partner for nearly a decade. The actor and “Part of Me” songstress share a daughter, Daisy.

As for Trudeau, in 2005, he married Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, with whom he shares three children, Xavier, Ella-Grace, and Hadrien. They announced their separation in 2023.
