Perry and Groban dated in 2009, and he reflected fondly on the relationship.

“We’re very good friends,” he said, per People. “We met before her first album was even released, and we hit it off because we’re both goofballs.”

During a 2017 livestream with James Corden, Perry ranked her past lovers. She referred to Groban as “the one that got away.” Groban admitted that this shocked him.

“That was a double-take and a spit of my coffee when I saw that,” he said, adding, “It’s very sweet of her to say that. I’m very flattered by it. But I was very surprised by it, too.”

Perry reportedly later wrote the song “The One That Got Away” about him.

Katy Perry reacted to Josh Groban’s engagement

Groban recently announced his engagement to Natalie McQueen. Perry posted a video of herself having a strong reaction to this news. In a TikTok of her wearing a robe over a headline announcing the engagement, Perry poured herself a drink and began to mock-cry. 

The reaction to the post has been mixed. Some people loved it.

“This is what twitter used to be like in 2010… celebrity chaos instead of curated promotions,” one Reddit user wrote. “I welcome this insanity!”

“I guess I’m in the minority but I think this is pretty funny,” wrote another person.

Other people were less fond of it. Some believe that Perry shouldn’t have put so much attention on a past relationship.

“This is such a weird thing to do!!” one person wrote. “Even if it’s an inside joke.”

“She just can’t get enough attention for herself,” another person added. “She has to try to take their moment and make it about her in the media.”

Some people also pointed to the fact that this comes shortly after Perry was accused of sexual harassment by Ruby Rose and several others.

“Yep this is exactly what i would do following an onslaught of credible sexual assault and harassment claims.”

Many people also wondered how Perry’s current boyfriend, Justin Trudeau, feels about the post.

She said that the song showed a different side of herself

When Perry released “The One That Got Away,” she said she believed the song showed a different side of her than her other music.

“I’m so pleased to select ‘The One That Got Away’ as my sixth single because this song shows a very different side of me that I haven’t shown with my past singles on this record,” Perry said in a statement from the label. “I think that everyone can relate to this song. I wrote (it) about when you promise someone forever, but you end up not being able to follow through.”

She said that she hopes her fans could take a lesson from it to avoid heartbreak.

“It’s a bittersweet story,” she said. “Hopefully, the listener learns from hearing it and never has to say they had ‘The One’ get away.”
