Lisa Marie Presley said Michael Jackson chose drugs over their marriage
Jackson and Presley ended their marriage in 1996. While she said she didn’t have proof he was using drugs during their marriage, she noticed some suspicious behaviors. When she picked up Jackson from one doctor, he would often be incoherent. In 1995, he collapsed onstage.
“I couldn’t tell what was happening,” she told Oprah Winfrey in an interview. “Dehydration. Low blood pressure. Exhaustion. A virus.”
She said that this moment made her begin to suspect he was using drugs. This ultimately led to the end of their marriage.
“He had to make a decision. Was it the drugs and the vampires or me?” she said. “And he pushed me away.”
By vampires, she said she meant “sycophants” around Jackson.
Lisa Marie Presley said she wished she could have helped Michael Jackson
Presley said she liked taking care of Jackson during their marriage. She hoped that she could save him.
“I wanted to ‘save him.’ I wanted to save him from the inevitable which is what has just happened,” she wrote on MySpace after his death. “His family and his loved ones also wanted to save him from this as well but didn’t know how and this was 14 years ago. We all worried that this would be the outcome then. At that time, In trying to save him, I almost lost myself.”
She said that taking care of him eventually became too much for her.
“I became very ill and emotionally/ spiritually exhausted in my quest to save him from certain self-destructive behavior and from the awful vampires and leeches he would always manage to magnetize around him,” she wrote. “I was in over my head while trying.”
He predicted that drugs may lead to the end of his life
During their marriage, Presley said Jackson told her he worried he would end up like her father, Elvis Presley. Elvis died of cardiac arrest related to drug use.
“We were sitting by the fire, and he was telling me that he was afraid he was going to end up like my father,” she said. “[Michael] was always asking me about when he died, how it happened, when it happened and where. He said, ‘I feel like I’m going to end up the same way.'”
Years later, Jackson died of cardiac arrest due to a drug overdose. Presley said she immediately remembered their conversation when she heard the news.
“I promptly tried to deter him from the idea, at which point he just shrugged his shoulders and nodded almost matter of fact as if to let me know, he knew what he knew and that was kind of that,” she wrote. “14 years later I am sitting here watching on the news an ambulance leaves the driveway of his home, the big gates, the crowds outside the gates, the coverage, the crowds outside the hospital, the Cause of death and what may have led up to it and the memory of this conversation hit me, as did the unstoppable tears.”
