Hollywood is mourning after it was confirmed that veteran actor Malcolm-Jamal Warner has died. Authorities said he drowned on July 20 while swimming on Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast at Playa Cocles in Limon province. Warner was 54.
Officials added that the accidental drowning occurred when a current pulled him out deeper into the ocean.
According to the AP, “He was rescued by people on the beach.” They tried to save him but by the time first responders arrived, he did not have any vital signs and was taken to the morgue.
Warner will be remembered for his role playing Theodore “Theo” Huxtable on the hit TV sitcom The Cosby Show. But he had several other roles throughout his career. Here’s a look at those and what his net worth was at the time of his passing.
What was Warner’s net worth?
Warner was born on Aug. 18, 1970, in Jersey City, New Jersey. He became interested in acting at a young age and took on a few parts as a child actor, before graduating from The Professional Children’s School in New York City.
Warner’s breakthrough role was in 1984 when he was cast in The Cosby Show. The series ran until 1992.
After The Cosby Show ended, Warner continued acting. He starred in Malcolm & Eddie from 1996 to 2000, and had recurring roles in a number of shows, including Listen Up and Reed Between the Lines. Warner was a series regular on The Resident, portraying AJ Austin in all six seasons. In 2016, he played O.J. Simpson’s friend, Al Cowlings, on The People vs. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story.
He also worked in the music industry and directed videos for New Edition and Special Ed.

We were both super fans of the hit Cosby Show and continued to follow his career on shows like Malcolm and Eddie and The Resident. Every time I ran into Malcolm, we would have deep and fun conversations about basketball, life, and business. He will truly be missed.”
Recording artist Maxwell also posted on the platform: “I remember meeting u and not believing that ‘Theo’ himself was aware of me. The black representation of our greatest variation. This is devastating. My prayers and well wishes to your loved ones. Rest in peace Malcolm.”
Actor and singer Tyrese Gibson put out a lengthy tribute to Warner that read in part: “Today, we lost a gentle giant. A man who won our hearts not by force, but by quiet grace. From the very beginning, Malcolm-Jamal Warner reminded us that being calm, classy, sophisticated, and soulful could carry you far in life … Today, we mourn what feels unimaginable. Warner is survived by his wife and young daughter. The actor has never publicly shared their names to protect their privacy.
