Do you know what color dress Margaret Qualley wore to the premiere of The Dog Stars? It was a black dress with interesting details and a ton of movement in the skirt. It would have been a fashion hit, some critics have argued, if attention had not been dragged down to her shoes. The famed actor stepped out in a pair of “barefoot” Chanel sandals, and it is all anyone can talk about.

Margaret Qualley steps out in a gorgeous dress and odd shoes at ‘The Dog Stars’ premiere

On August 20, Margaret Qualley stepped out at London’s Odeon Luxe Leicester Square dressed head-to-toe in Chanel. Her gown was a statement. Covered in cascading paillettes with a plunging V-neckline and long fringe that moved with every step, the gown looked like it was made for her. It could have all been a fashion hit, if she hadn’t slipped her heel into a pair of barefoot sandals.

Qualley wore Chanel’s now-infamous “barefoot” shoes, a design consisting of little more than a heel cap secured to the foot with a few delicate straps, leaving the arch, sole, and toes almost entirely exposed. The foot-forward footwear has plenty of critics, and despite Qualley’s best efforts to make the bold footwear work, she only managed to spark more debate.

The infamous shoes were revealed back in April

Chanel’s creative director Matthieu Blazy first unveiled the barefoot heels in April at the Cruise 2027 show in Biarritz, France. During that event, models wore them down a carpeted runway. The goal, Blazy revealed, was to create a “beachy” aesthetic, evoking a vision of women walking out of the sea. The look immediately sparked online debate. No one could decide if the concept was a brilliant step forward in fashion footwear, or if it was simply too strange to work.

That was pretty much the last the world saw of the odd footwear choice, until now. Qualley is one of the first major stars to wear them on the red carpet. In fact, it might just be the first premiere the barefoot Chanel sandal has been invited to. The sandals’ big night out has everyone talking.

The Internet Reacts

Chanel is known for some bold stylistic choices, but the barefoot sandal is so minimalistic that it has most of the internet talking. Critics absolutely tore the shoes to shreds, questioning everything from the hygiene of going essentially barefoot in public to the practicality and safety of the choice. More humorous opponents took to social media to mock the minimalistic design, noting that “shrinkflation” was infiltrating everything these days. One clever reviewer likened the sandal’s minimalistic heel cap and strap to the disposable face masks millions of people donned during the pandemic.

While Margaret Qualley’s Chanel sandals had plenty of witty critics, it wasn’t all hate for the shoes. Some fans praised Qualley for taking the risk, even if they themselves wouldn’t slip their toes into the design. Another fan suggested they were chic, while others praised the vision of the outfit as a whole.

If you happen to love them, though, you’ll need to wait several more months to get your hands on them. The design is reportedly not slated for a widespread release until November. The price hasn’t come cheap, either. The shoe’s exact retail price hasn’t been revealed, but insiders believe they’ll sell for at least $1,500.
