Mariska Hargitay Hopes Chris Meloni Can Return to ‘SVU’ After ‘Organized Crime’ Cancellation: ‘Always Open [to] Getting Benson and Stabler Together’
A Benson and Stabler reunion could still happen, if Mariska Hargitay gets her wish.
On Wednesday, the Law & Order: SVU star spoke to reporters at NBCUniversal’s Emmy Kick-Off luncheon. At one point, she weighed in on whether Chris Meloni’s Eliot Stabler character might appear in future episodes of the show following the recent cancellation of companion series Law & Order: Organized Crime. (SVU was recently renewed for season 28.)
“I hope so,” Hargitay said (via Deadline). “That is a very heartening thing for both of us, that our relationship was so iconic culturally and that Benson and Stabler still resonates is deeply meaningful to me, and Chris and I, I’m sure you know, are very, very close. He’s a very in-demand actor, so we’ll see if the schedule is lined up.”
“I love Chris and I love acting with Chris, so I’m always open to working with him and getting Benson and Stabler together,” she added. “They’re happiest when they’re together.”
Hargitay has shown her support for her former SVU co-star following his show’s cancellation. After Meloni posted an emotional Instagram video reacting to the end of Organized Crime, she responded with a simple comment: “P4L,” shorthand for “partners for life.”
Law & Order: SVU airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on NBC. Episodes stream the next day on Peacock.
