Matthew Perry’s Sister Will Serve as a ‘Key Voice’ in a New Netflix Documentary
While the world knows Matthew Perry for his acting roles, his battle with addiction, and his untimely death, everyone is about to get a deeper glimpse into who he was in his private life. Nearly three years after his death from a ketamine overdose, Netflix has announced plans for a documentary about his life. It will be told largely through the voice of his sister.
Netflix has announced ‘The One About Matthew Perry’
On September 1, Netflix shocked subscribers with a big announcement. The streaming service provider shared that they would be releasing a three-part docuseries about Matthew Perry. The docuseries will premiere on October 27, the anniversary of Perry’s death.
Netflix is billing it as the “first in-depth, definitive documentary” about Perry’s life. The project will chart his path from a rising comedic star to the beloved actor the world came to know as Chandler Bing on Friends and all that came after. The series won’t be shying away from the harder topics, either. Netflix is promising “candid new details” on the actor’s private struggles. The series is directed by Emmy-winning filmmaker Mary Robertson.
Mia Perry Bowick will be heavily involved
Netflix isn’t just telling Matthew Perry’s story with their upcoming documentary. The streaming service provider is giving a voice to one of the people closest to the late comedy star. According to Variety, Perry’s sister, Mia Perry Bowick, serves as the “key voice” throughout the documentary. The series is built substantially around her testimony. It will also draw on unreleased photos and videos from the family’s private archive.
Bowick has opened up about the decision to get involved with the project in a public statement. In her statement, she noted that it had taken time for her to feel ready to discuss Matthew, who he was behind the stardom, and the complex nature of his struggles.
She went on to describe the impact her brother had on her own life. “As his sister, he shaped who I am today, the person I strive to be, and the work to which I’ve devoted my life. Matthew had a beautiful heart and a generous spirit, and even in his darkest moments, he could still make you laugh and feel loved,” she said. She said her goal is to ensure the world knows who Matthew Perry really was.
What the Series Will Cover
While Mia Perry Bowick is a key contributor to the project, several other people deeply connected to Matthew Perry are attached, as well. The One About Matthew Perry will include interviews with former creative collaborators and lifelong friends. It is unclear exactly who has contributed.
As of now, it remains unclear whether any of Perry’s Friends castmates will appear in the documentary themselves. Each of the five living members of the ensemble cast has paid tribute to Perry in their own ways.
The project comes just months after the last of five people implicated in his death was sentenced to jail time. Kenneth Iwamasa, Matthew Perry’s assistant, was sentenced to three years and five months behind bars in May for his role in the actor’s death.
