It has been almost two months since Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift said “I do” in front of 1,000 guests at Madison Square Garden. Since the wedding, everyone from event planners to fans has debated why the duo would have picked such an unconventional venue for their nuptials. Now, Travis Kelce is explaining exactly why the Garden made perfect sense as the site of their wedding; it was meaningful to him.

Kelce told reporters, “It was cool to live out my childhood dream of being in that venue, the mecca of all sports venues.” He went on to reveal that he always wanted to be in the venue for something really exciting. He joked that while his wife watched the Knicks complete the biggest comeback in NBA Finals history just days before their nuptials, his big moment was the actual wedding.
Kelce also expressed gratitude toward the venue’s ownership for making the day possible. “I thanked the owners of MSG for allowing us to get the opportunity to do that, knowing that we wanted a private event, and it was perfect,” he said.

Travis Kelce might have focused on the sentimental reason behind his and Taylor Swift’s wedding venue during his press conference, but it wasn’t the only reason the venue was chosen. Reporting in the lead-up to the wedding suggested the choice was just as much about privacy, control, and security as it was about the actual venue itself. According to CNN, sources close to the planning process cited several priorities behind the decision. Those priorities included keeping the event private for family and friends and ensuring the couple’s safety.
Madison Square Garden fit those priorities in several ways. Perhaps most importantly, the arena has no windows, which ensured utter privacy once guests were inside. No spy shots of the event would have been possible. The Garden staff’s expertise in security and logistics made it a prime choice, too. Swift also has a history with the venue, performing there multiple times during her career. As celebrity event planner Michael Russo Triggs put it to CBS News, “I think for most people, this seems like the weirdest choice in the world, but for her, this is spot-on.”

We do know that the couple married in front of around 1,000 guests, and that the ceremony was officiated by Adam Sandler. They opted to forgo a traditional wedding party with groomsmen and bridesmaids. Their respective brothers served as man of honor and best man. Jason Kelce’s daughters served as flower girls. After the ceremony, an hours-long reception with live performances, party games, and a raffle followed.
