All eyes were on Prince Harry and Meghan Markle when the two touched in Australia to begin their four-day trip Down Under. And on day one, many royal watchers noticed that the duke’s wife was sporting her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana’s iconic Cartier watch.

Now, someone who used to work for the royal family is sharing the significance of the classic watch — especially as the Sussexes embark on their non-royal projects.

Grant Harrold was King Charles’ butler for seven years. He also looked after Prince William, Kate, and Prince Harry whenever they stayed at Highgrove House.

Speaking on behalf of Slots Temple, Harrold told Showbiz Cheat Sheet, “It’s lovely that Meghan is wearing one of Princess Diana’s personal items. It’s a way of keeping Princess Diana’s memory alive and showing that she is still in their thoughts. It’s also nice to see the watch despite Meghan not technically doing royal work. She’s not just wearing it for the royal nod. She’s wearing it purely for the sentimental value.

“After Diana passed, her items were put into storage and were left untouched for many years. I actually archived a lot of them, making a log of everything, when I worked there, which was years after her death. A lot of those items have now been passed on to Prince William and Harry, and they’ve in turn given them to Kate and Meghan.”

The former royal butler added, “This is a clever way that Meghan can make sure she’s keeping her late mother-in-law in people’s minds. I’m sure Harry will be very touched by the gesture, and it will mean a lot to him. Your loved ones are no longer here and you want them to still be part of a special occasion or a day.”
