Attention, binge-watchers. One of the most chaotic seasons of Married at First Sight is coming to Netflix this May.

The popular reality series, which sees complete strangers say “I do” moments after meeting at the altar, has produced no shortage of crazy moments over the years. From the shady husband who confessed to his new wife that his ex-girlfriend was pregnant to the bride who was arrested at the airport on the way to her honeymoon, MAFS often delivers the unexpected. But when it comes to unprecedented moments, the show’s second Chicago-set season takes the cake.

‘Married at First Sight’ Chicago was a dumpster fire

Married at First Sight Season 18 (which premiered on Lifetime in late 2024) followed the standard format. The show’s trio of experts matched 10 handpicked singles, who got married, sight unseen, and then embarked on eight-week trial marriages. Unfortunately for most of these couples, things started to go wrong almost immediately. [Stop reading here if you aren’t interested in spoilers.]

With the exception of the still-married Camille and Thomas – who had their own issues – the other four Chicago couples’ marriages imploded, in some cases in a dramatic fashion.

Ikechi – who’d previously tried to get cast on a different season of MAFS – introduced himself to his new wife Emem with a cringe-inducing song at their reception, then proceeded to freak out once he realized that she was more successful than he was. At one point, he even accused her of being aggressive and touching him inappropriately. After a few lackluster attempts to work things out, he shut down completely, essentially refusing to participate in the show’s process. At the couple’s retreat, he showed up only to present Emem with half-completed divorce papers. To the shock of absolutely no one, they did not stay married. Emem swiftly rebounded with a whirlwind romance with a man named Brandon, who proposed at the end of the season. They welcomed their daughter earlier this year.

Juan and Karla’s marriage was less dramatic, but no more successful. The pair initially bonded over their similar cultural backgrounds. (Her family is Mexican, while he immigrated to the U.S. from Colombia with his parents.) But beyond that, there was zero chemistry. He was an ambitious entrepreneur, while she was a quirky, crystal-loving hairstylist. They played nice on the show, but engaged in a nasty war of words online post filming. He said she was “bullying” him online; she claimed he lied about an unspecified person matter on their wedding day.

David and Madison’s affair shocked ‘MAFS’ fans

But the real drama in MAFS Season 18 came from the final two couples: Allen and Madison and David and Michelle. These ill-conceived matches led to one of the show’s most dramatic moments: the first-ever couples swap.

Michelle and David’s marriage was a dud from the start. She checked out after she learned he lived in his parents’ basement and was dismissive (and at times, rude) to her husband. Allen and Madison gave their relationship more of a shot. But while Allen was all-in, Madison clearly wasn’t feeling her husband. Their brief marriage mostly consisted of her nagging him to go to the gym, change the way he dressed, and get expensive dental work to fix his less-than-perfect teeth.

In front of the cameras, both Madison and David put on a show of wanting to make things work with their respective spouses. But behind the scenes, they were engaging in a flirty back and forth that started during the honeymoon. The truth about their affair finally came out when David mistakenly send Michelle a text meant for Madison.

David tried to cover up his mistake, claiming the message about wanting to “eat you up” was meant for his cousin. But Michelle went into Nancy Drew mode. She was convinced that he was lying and that Madison was the intended recipient. The full truth emerged at the couples retreat, blindsiding Allen and leaving the rest of the cast to take sides. As Karla put it, the whole situation was “grimy.” But it ended happily for at least two people: Madison and David are still together and recently got engaged. And watching the mess unfold on TV was compelling, to say the least.
