Long – who most recently played Michael Jackson’s mother Katherine Jackson in the hit movie Michael – received her much-deserved star on September 16. It’s a moment she could have scarcely imagined when she was a little girl growing up in Los Angeles.

“We used to walk down the block and look at all the stars,” Long recalled in an interview with Variety, speaking of her childhood memories of spending time with her mother.

“I came here with very humble beginnings,” she added. “This star is just as much for me as it is for my mother, because she’s the one who brought us here.”

For the special event, Long wore an ankle-skimming white dress with a fitted waist, sculpted sleeves, and a flared skirt. The Ria Linen-Blend Maxi Dress from Khaite retails for $2,400, according to Fashion Bomb Daily. She paired the dress with a pair white high-heeled platform sandals and a pair sparkling earrings. He hair was slicked back in a high ponytail.

Snoop Dogg paid tribute to the Soul Food star at the ceremony. For the occasion, he wore a custom jacket covered with images from Long’s many TV and movie roles over the years, including Boyz n the Hood, Friday, Love Jones, and The Best Man.

“Nia been a star. Y’all just now putting it on the sidewalk? You see, we’ve been knowing … Come on now, Nia wasn’t just in the culture. Nia is the culture,” the rapper said

“For about 30 years, Nia Long had every Black man in America thinking he had a chance,” he added. “You didn’t. But she let you dream, and we appreciate you for that, Nia, real talk.”

In addition to Snoop, Long was joined at her ceremony by her Love Jones co-star Larenz Tate (with whom she’s set to reunite in an upcoming Netflix movie), Terrence Howard, Morris Chestnut, Mike Epps, Evan Ross, Bill Bellamy, Tiffany Haddish, Estelle, and Courtney B. Vance, as well as her sons, Massai and Kez, and her mother, Talita Long.

For Long, getting her star was a dream come true, and a moment she wanted to savor.

“It’s every girl’s dream, and everything women work hard for,” she told Variety. “The little girl in me is like, ‘Oh my gosh, we did it!’ And the woman in me is, ‘Take a moment and be proud of yourself.’”
