Selena Gomez Says She ‘Loves Getting Older’ Amid Renewed Scrutiny of Her 2016 Look

Selena Gomez said that as she gets older, it’s funny to see her past makeup looks go viral. Still, it makes her feel as though people want to freeze her in time. She said she doesn’t want this for herself. Gomez said that she has tried to embrace aging.

Gomez’s red carpet looks often go viral. Some of her makeup looks from a decade ago continue to resurface, particularly her smokey eye. She said she finds these throwbacks fun, but noted that people seem to wish she stayed that age forever.

“That cracks me up. I’ve got to be honest, the 2016 throwbacks are fun but I think people want to freeze me in time to that period of my life,” she told People. “It was such a hectic period, and of course I had to rock a smoky eye. I was trying to be cool! It was probably more interesting because I’m now chilling, which is great.”

Gomez doesn’t want this. She said that she has enjoyed aging and wouldn’t want to go backward.

“I don’t feel like it’s a bad thing. Getting older has been so fun,” she said. “I’m not scared at all. I love getting older. Things are going to change and things are going to sag, but you’re alive. I think age is just a number in many ways.”

She shared her hopes for the remainder of her 30s

Gomez is 34. She said that her greatest hope for the rest of this decade is contentment.

“I just want to be happy,” she said, adding, “I hope I’m still doing things that I love, and I hope that if I stop loving what I do, that I will stop. I actually never really place value in what I do because it can destroy you instantly. I like to be appreciative of everything that comes my way, and I just hope for great things.”

Selena Gomez shared the advice she would tell her sister as she gets older

When asked, Gomez said she doesn’t have much beauty advice for her younger self. Instead, she wanted to address her younger sister.

“I don’t know what I’d say to my younger self, but I have a 13-year-old sister,” she said. “My sister is so much cooler than me and has more confidence than I do. She is actually so thrilled to try things, but she also knows she doesn’t need it.”

She said that she wanted to tell her sister that she was beautiful as she was.

“I would just tell her, ‘You’re beautiful exactly how you are, but try anything you want.’ She loves coming to the office and having a field day, and that makes me happy,” she said. “I think everyone’s pretty and beautiful the way they are, but I do love a little glam.”
