One royal family member we don’t hear from a lot is Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh (formerly Sophie, Countess of Wessex). She’s married to King Charles’ youngest brother, Prince Edward, and is a working royal, but her relationship with other senior royals has always been a bit of a mystery, until now. An expert has decoded what the duchess’s relationship with the Princess of Wales (formerly known as Kate Middleton) is like following an event they attended together.

Darren Stanton is a body language and behavioral expert. He previously worked as a police officer and used his expertise to uncover the truth when interviewing hundreds of suspects. He later moved into media and TV as a consultant and has been dubbed the “Human Lie Detector.”

Here’s what Stanton noticed after analyzing the footage of Kate and Sophie as they stood next to each other and chatted during the celebrations for Garter Day on June 15.

Speaking on behalf of Betfair Casino, Stanton told Showbiz Cheat Sheet, “It is always interesting to look at events when the royal family attends together. I think sometimes people mistake the relationship that they have with each other. Because they work with each other and people call them the Firm, people forget that behind it all, they are a family.

“You can really see that family dynamic at Garter Day. Kate and Sophie clearly have a fantastic friendship. All of their gestures suggest a genuine relationship. They are showing incredibly broad duchenne smiles — their cheeks are raised, their eyes are engaged, there are crow’s feet and laugh lines — and they turn towards each other matching and mirroring each other’s gestures and emotions. There is a really close bond.”

Showbiz Cheat Sheet acknowledges conditions and cultures can impact body language and is sensitive to all backgrounds.
