‘It Felt Like My Entire Life Was Ending’: Hailey Bieber Opens Up About Her Terrifying, Lonely Postpartum Journey
Hailey Bieber welcomed her son, Jack Blues, with Justin Bieber in August 2024. Although the model embraced motherhood, the postpartum period brought its own challenges. Despite having a new addition to the family, she struggled with feelings of loneliness.
The Rhode founder has occasionally opened up about her experience with motherhood. In a candid admission, she discussed her experience with premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). According to Women’s Wear Daily, Bieber said she felt lonely during her postpartum struggles and found that talking about her experiences helped her cope.
“After I had my son, I struggled with [PMDD] a bit, and there’s just not a lot of conversation or research around it,” the 29-year-old said. According to the Mayo Clinic, premenstrual dysphoric disorder is a severe form of premenstrual syndrome (PMS). It can cause significant mood changes, anxiety, sadness, hopelessness, and irritability, among other symptoms.
Speaking about the disorder helped Bieber, as she said, “Conversation, for me personally, makes me feel less alone.” “When we can identify with each other and have conversations relating to each other and talking about the things we’re dealing with and struggling with, I do think it makes it feel like less of a lonely journey,” the mother of one shared.
Bieber expressed her frustration over the lack of awareness about women’s health. She highlighted how having her baby was both a special and intense journey that she embarked on. “There’s so much that happens when you are pregnant, during childbirth,” the model added. The model added that women go through many changes before their babies enter the world.
It appears that Bieber has been doing her bit to create awareness about PMDD. She first opened up about her condition back in May. According to Page Six, Bieber appeared on the SHE MD podcast and spoke about how it disrupted everything around her. She noted that the disorder largely affected her career, relationships, and even social life.
The disorder made the time before her period extremely unbearable. “For me, it felt like the week before my period was not just PMS,” Bieber shared. She further revealed that the duration felt “extreme, mentally.” All she could feel was that her entire life was going to end. “It sucks,” she exclaimed, before adding, “It is also dangerous, and it should be taken seriously.”
Bieber is not the only celebrity to have spoken publicly about PMDD. Lili Reinhart, Zara Larsson, and Dixie D’Amelio have also discussed their experiences with the condition.
The Riverdale alum recently spoke about her struggles with PMDD on the Reclaiming with Monica Lewinsky podcast. The 30-year-old revealed that she feels “suicidal” during the week before her period. “I didn’t know that I felt that way until I wasn’t on medication,” the actress said.
Back in September 2023, D’Amelio confessed to her struggles with PMDD and addressed the common stigma around it. She confessed, “People are going to be like, ‘Oh my God, everybody gets that.’ Like, no.” The social media influencer revealed she suffered from severe anxiety before her time of the month came. Before she addressed the problem, she thought women were supposed to feel this way before their period.
