Hailey Bieber debuted a new look that has sent internet searches soaring. Thanks to the Rhode founder’s new haircut and color, which is the darkest shade she’s donned in over a decade, Google searches for “espresso hair” are up an incredible 400% over the past year.

Now, before you run out to get your locks colored like Mrs. Bieber, a beauty expert is sharing a few things to know before you go darker.

According to Danielle Louise, hair and beauty expert on Fresha, this look taps directly into the seasonal shift towards richer hair colors.

She noted, “The timing of Hailey’s new hair is interesting because this is exactly when we tend to see people moving away from the lighter, brighter shades they wore through spring and summer. Espresso brown gives you that really rich, glossy finish without having to go completely black. It can also be adapted depending on someone’s natural coloring, so a stylist can make it warmer, cooler, or more neutral rather than treating espresso as one exact shade.

“The 400% increase in searches tells us this isn’t just about one celebrity transformation. People are actively looking for espresso hair, and Hailey has landed on the color at a point when interest is already significantly higher than it was a year ago.”

Louise noted that Bieber’s decision to go darker has pushed the trend further on the map, explaining, “When someone like Hailey changes her hair, people don’t necessarily walk into a salon and ask for an exact copy. What it can do is give people a reference point for something they’ve already been considering.

“With searches for espresso hair up 400%, I would expect clients to start showing stylists pictures of this look and asking how they can make a deeper brunette work for them. My advice would be to take the inspiration, but let your colourist tailor the undertone and depth to your existing hair, complexion and how much maintenance you’re actually prepared to do.”

Louise added that there’s another reason espresso hair is taking over autumn too, sharing, “One of the reasons I think espresso works so well as an autumn color is that it can look dramatic without feeling like a novelty trend. A really dark brunette can appear almost black in certain lighting, but you still have those brown tones coming through. The shine is a huge part of the finished look too. If the hair looks healthy and glossy, it gives that expensive-looking finish people associate with a really good brunette.”

However, Louise is cautioning anyone who currently has a lighter shade about going dramatically darker, warning that it is a bigger commitment than simply choosing a brown shade from a color chart.

“If you’re blonde or heavily highlighted, I wouldn’t recommend jumping straight into a very dark brunette without talking it through properly with a colorist. Previously lightened hair can behave differently when you add darker pigment back in, and getting the tone right is important. Depending on your starting color, a colorist may need to restore warmer pigments before taking the hair darker so the result doesn’t look flat or muddy.

“You also need to think about what happens if you change your mind. Going dark can be relatively quick, but getting heavily colored dark hair back to blonde safely can take multiple appointments. If you’re unsure, ask your stylist about going a little darker first or using a more temporary or demi-permanent option where appropriate. You can still get that glossy autumn brunette effect without immediately committing to the darkest possible shade.”
