Kim Kardashian was recently surprised by a fan. Instead of presenting her with a gift, the fan asked Kardashian to sign a Birkin bag worth tens of thousands of dollars. The unusual encounter quickly went viral, drawing mixed reactions online.

According to Mandatory, Kardashian encountered the fan while in Shanghai. The 45-year-old traveled to China to promote a new NikeSKIMS pop-up in the city. She wore a brown bodysuit from the collection with a trench coat.

During the encounter, a fan approached her with a rare red crocodile Hermès Birkin reportedly worth about $80,000. The man, a luxury reseller and influencer, asked Kardashian to sign the bag with a gold marker. He clarified that the bag belonged to a friend of his who really liked Kardashian. 

The reality TV star was visibly hesitant at first. She refused to write on the expensive bag after hearing the unusual request. When she confirmed that the fan really wanted her to go for it, he reassured her and asked her to sign in the middle. 

An amused Kardashian was heard saying “Oh my god” as she signed the bag. She jokingly described the decision to autograph the Birkin as ‘blasphemous.’ Later, the Keeping Up With The Kardashians star hugged the fan and posed for pictures.

A clip capturing the moment was circulating across various social media platforms and garnered a lot of attention. Several Instagram users called the bag “fake,” with one writing, “Luckily it’s a dupe.” Others claimed that counterfeit Birkins are common and argued that an owner of an authentic bag would not want Kardashian’s autograph on it.

Several other users had a different view of the fan’s request. One user claimed, “That guy is smart. His Birkin value skyrockets with Kim signature,” while another added, “Priceless, and it’s on film he’s a smart guy.” “If that bag is already expensive, now with his signature it costs double,” a third user penned. 

Kardashian has had a history of receiving massive backlash over her Birkins. According to People, the 45-year-old was photographed with a Birkin bag made out of elephant leather last November. Many pointed out that she used the same bag, which also appeared on her drama series All’s Fair.

The intense backlash eventually led to Kardashian giving a clarification. During an appearance on the Khloé in Wonder Land podcast in January, she shared that the Birkin was a fake. Moreover, it was just a prop that she used in the drama series. 

“I brought a lot of my bags in to film All’s Fair, but then we just got a bunch of other ones that we would have and leave on set that we could leave there and grab if we ever needed one for a specific outfit,” the beauty mogul explained. She also noted that the hardware and texture of the bag itself revealed that it was a knockoff. 

However, she admitted that she should have been a “little bit smarter” about showcasing the bag on the show. Moreover, she mentioned that she wished she had shared the story behind using the prop.
