Paul McCartney met Queen Elizabeth II multiple times, beginning in his Beatles years. McCartney said that he always had a positive dynamic with the late queen. His wife, Nancy Shevell, believes that Queen Elizabeth looked forward to meeting with him. She joked that the Queen “fancied” McCartney.

Paul McCartney’s wife believes Queen Elizabeth was interested in him

McCartney is one of the most famous people in the world. Because of this, Amy Poehler recently asked him if he ever got starstruck.

“Did you meet someone who, you wanted their autograph, or you were blown away [because] you knew that they were a famous person?” she asked on her Good Hang podcast.

McCartney was quick to answer that it was Queen Elizabeth, though he never received her autograph.

“She was a babe,” he said. “We all used to think, ‘Wow, this is amazing.’ You know, like, having a king, he’s got this girl. This babe. So, we kind of liked her in other ways than we shouldn’t have liked her.”

McCartney joked that Shevell believes that the appreciation went both ways.

“Nancy, my wife now, she says, ‘She fancied you,’” he said. “Now, there’s no knowing if there’s any truth to that.”

He then added that he likes to believe that this was true.

He met her multiple times

McCartney met Queen Elizabeth for the first time in 1965, when she awarded the Beatles their MBEs. He went on to meet with her multiple times over the years. She later knighted him and gave him an award at their final meeting in 2018.

“Our last meeting came in 2018,” McCartney wrote after her death. “Because of my respect and love for the Queen and her fabulous sense of humor when I was given the Companion of Honour medal, I shook her hand, leaned in, and said, ‘We have got to stop meeting like this,’ to which she giggled slightly and got on with the ceremony. I did wonder if I was a bit too cheeky after saying this, after all, this was the Queen, but I have a feeling she didn’t mind.”

In his interview with Poehler, McCartney also said he admired the Queen’s sense of humor.

“Well, she was a laugh,” he said. ‘That’s one of the things I liked about [her]. She had a good sense of humor.”

Paul McCartney also spoke about the honor of having Queen Elizabeth knight him

In 1997, McCartney became the first of two Beatles to receive their knighthood. He said it was a thrill for him.

“It’s amazing because the first thing you hear, you got a letter through the post, saying ‘You’re gonna be knighted, but don’t tell anyone,’” McCartney told Wired. “So, that’s a pretty buzzy letter to get. It’s very exciting. You have to be a bit of a royalist. You have to think that the queen is cool. Some people actually turn it down.”

Despite this, he admitted that becoming a knight came with a little embarrassment.

“At first, the whole thing was a bit embarrassing, to be honest,” he told the LA Times in 2006. “Even the people on my farm went, ‘Do we have to call you Sir Paul?’”

Still, he said that most people were happy for him.
