To no one’s surprise, there’s been plenty of drama around Prince Harry‘s big trip back to England.

The duke, who arrived in the U.K. on July 6, was initially going to attend the one-year countdown to the Invictus Games Birmingham 2027 with his wife, Meghan Markle, and their two children. However, those plans were axed after the government declined the Sussexes’ request for taxpayer-funded police protection outside royal residences, and Harry made the trip solo.

There were also reports that Harry was offered royal accommodations to stay at Buckingham Palace while in the country, but that offer was rescinded. That’s because the prince did not respond by the deadline, which was put in place so preparations and arrangements could be made since no one is living at the Palace currently.

Now, someone who used to work for King Charles and knows Harry very well is weighing in on the “embarrassing” back and forth going on between the duke’s camp and the royals. Plus, why Prince William is likely just shaking his head over it all.

Grant Harrold was King Charles’ butler for seven years. Harrold’s duties included that of valet, housekeeper, house manager, and driver. He also looked after Prince William and Prince Harry when they stayed at Highgrove House. Since leaving the royal household, Harrold has become one of the U.K.’s leading etiquette experts. In 2025, he published his first book, The Royal Butler, which became an Amazon bestseller. He regularly appears on TV offering royal commentary on both current and historic news stories.

Speaking on behalf of CanadaCasino, Harrold told Showbiz Cheat Sheet, “This is an extraordinary yet upsetting development. Harry is saying one thing, and the palace is saying another. This back-and-forth with contradicting statements feels like a throwback to where we were six years ago when Harry and Meghan announced they were stepping down as senior royals.

“Unfortunately, this indicates that Harry and the king’s relationship has completely broken down. It is a PR crisis for both parties, and the Palace team would not be moving forward with these remarks without the king’s full backing. The king is obviously saddened by this latest setback. It is all a real mess and has really exposed their private relationship.”

Harrold added that the Prince of Wales is likely looking at all of this and thinking, “I told you so.”

“I do believe William would be having an ‘I told you so’ moment,” Harrold said. “William would have seen this coming, making this incredibly embarrassing for his father, who has yet again tried to offer Harry an olive branch. Harry has repeatedly slapped the king in the face, which is a great shame. It is all very embarrassing, especially for the royal family.”

One day after his arrival in the U.K., Harry received news he didn’t want to hear when he learned that he lost his lawsuit against Associated Newspapers Limited, the publisher of the Daily Mail, which he sued for unlawfully obtaining information. A U.K. High Court judge ruled against the prince’s favor, and his claims have been dismissed.
