Prince William and Prince Harry Avoiding Each Other Again Isn’t a Good Sign for Upcoming Anniversary
By all accounts, Prince Harry and Prince William still haven’t spoken to or seen one another since the Duke of Sussex moved back to the U.K. in August.
On Nov. 4, many royal watchers hoped that would change, and the princes would come together for an annual award bearing their late mother, Princess Diana‘s name. But that didn’t happen.
The event was the 2026 Diana Award, in which a virtual ceremony was held honoring 198 young global changemakers from 44 countries (including Ukraine and Mongolia for the first time). Young people between the ages of 9 and 25 were recognized for social action, humanitarian work, anti-bullying efforts, and community service.
“We are incredibly proud to celebrate young people from across the world receiving the Diana Award this year. Their courage, compassion, and determination to tackle some of the world’s most pressing challenges are a powerful reminder that young people are the changemakers of today,” Dr. Tessy Ojo CBE, Chief Executive, The Diana Award, said.
Both William and Harry congratulated this year’s recipients, but they did so separately, sending individual letters to the honorees, which highlighted their continued estrangement. It’s also sending a message about an upcoming date that people behind the scenes want to get the brothers together for so they can have discussions about projects to commemorate Diana’s life and legacy leading up to the 30th anniversary of her death.
It’s been reported from Harry’s camp that he would like to join in talks with William. The duke also discussed reconciling in his “One More Question” interview with GQ, saying, “People look at us, and go ‘How are you going to work it out?’ Some people don’t want it to work out. I want it to work out. With everything else that’s going on in the world, the most important thing is to reconcile. That’s the key point.”
However, the Prince of Wales isn’t too trusting of the Duke of Sussex these days and therefore is reluctant to reconcile.
A source told Closer, “William is refusing to come to the table. He’s stopped complaining about Harry and Meghan and is now acting like they don’t even exist instead. The courtiers are trying to get them together to talk about doing some sort of tribute to Diana, but William’s refused” and is “continuing to act as though Harry and Meghan are banished when they’re clearly right there at his doorstep.”
The last time the siblings did stand side by side to honor their mother was in 2021 when they put on a united front despite ongoing tensions to unveil a statue of Diana at Kensington Palace.
Princess Diana died on Aug. 31, 1997, from injuries she sustained in a car accident in Paris. Her companion, Dodi Fayed, and driver Henri Paul were both killed in the crash. Bodyguard Trevor Rees (previously Rees-Jones) was the only person who survived.
The question remains whether William and Harry will put their differences aside for a shared public tribute before August 2027.
