Princess Diana’s Brother Quietly Backs Meghan Markle Amid Royal Family Backlash

Meghan Markle has a surprising ally in her corner in her ongoing feud with the royal family. 

Princess Diana’s brother, Charles Spencer, is supporting Prince Harry’s wife, according to reports. The 9th Earl Spencer recently signaled that he had Meghan’s back via his wife, Cat Jarman.

Charles Spencer subtly signals approval of Meghan Markle

Cat recently took to Instagram to share a story about visiting the grave of Charles’ brother, who died in infancy in 1960, Express reported. Her post about the meaningful moment came not long after Meghan shared images from her and Harry’s visit with their two children to the Spencer estate of Althorp, where they apparently visited Diana’s private grave. 

While Meghan did not post any photos of Diana’s final resting place, critics felt sharing the photos at all – which showed Prince Archie and Harry holding bouquets as they walked down a tree-lined path – was in poor taste. There were also reports that Diana’s ex-husband, King Charles, was disturbed by the move. Harry’s estranged brother, Prince William, was probably even more upset, insiders say. 

William is likely ‘livid’ over Meghan Markle’s “tacky tasteless media post,” Hilary Fordwich, a British royals expert, told Fox News. 

“It’ll fuel his disgust so he shall thwart any major re-entry,” Fordwich claimed. “Likewise, Camilla, courtiers, palace aides, security officials and other institutional gatekeepers who are duty bound to protect the monarchy, will all do their utmost to thwart [Meghan and Harry’s] attempts.”

But Diana’s brother apparently did not have any issue with the post. 

There was “no clearer way for Earl Spencer to spell out that he approved of Meghan’s social media posts from Althorp” than via his wife’s post, The Daily Mail’s Richard Eden claimed, per Express.

Could Meghan Markle have been the next Princess Diana?

Others have pointed out that the Earl, who has been a fierce guardian of his sister’s legacy, likely approved Meghan’s post. 

“Meghan shared pictures of their children on what is assumed is Althorp, home of the Spencer family. That would have been allowed by the Spencer’s and is therefore permissible,” Richard Fitzwilliams, royal expert, told Fox News.

Harry’s uncle also hosted the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, along with Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, at Althorp. That move came after Harry’s plans to stay at Buckingham Palace fell through over scheduling issues. 

Charles Spencer may have a soft spot for Meghan in particular. The former Suits star had potential to follow in Diana’s footsteps when she joined the royal family, Simon Vigar argues in his new book The Four Wives of Windsor. She was comfortable in the public eye and had an interest in humanitarian causes, which could have made her a great asset to the family. But after a difficult few years, Meghan and Harry decided to step away from royal duties altogether. 

 “She should have been, could have been, fantastic for the royal family,” Vigar said. “But egos on both sides got in the way.”
