Royal Biographer Defends King Charles: ‘He Fought to Secure a Royal Plane’ to Bring Diana Home

King Charles’ allies are rallying to his defense ahead of the release of Charles Spencer’s new memoir about the late Princess Diana. 

In Swan Song: Diana My Sister, the Princess of Wales’ younger brother shares his perspective on her short life and tragic death. While the book doesn’t hit store shelves until September 22, excerpts are already stirring up a storm.  

Prince Charles said the world would ‘forget’ Princess Diana 

In the book, Spencer claims that when he and the future King of England were discussing Diana’s funeral arrangements, the then-Prince of Wales made a shockingly callous comment. 

“Rest assured,” the Earl of Spencer recalls his brother-in-law saying (via The Guardian). “We’ll forget her soon enough!’”

“I can’t believe you just said that,” Spencer says he replied, before hanging up the phone. 

Spencer wrote that he believed that his sister’s ex-husband had “pent-up contempt for Diana” and that the future king had a feeling of “horror that the world was so bowled over by her death.”

In Swan Song, Spencer also claims that when Charles spoke about Diana’s passing, he  “sounded giddily elated – like a lottery winner.”

Spencer’s allegations – which allegedly came as the two men argued over what role Prince William and Prince Harry would play in Diana’s funeral – were so shocking that Buckingham Palace made a rare public comment. 

“While we do not comment on books as a matter of principle, His Majesty is mindful that the pain of fraternal grief can cloud reason, affect judgment, and color memory in ways others do not recognise, even many years after such a loss,” a spokesperson said.

Charles did not hate Diana, supporter says 

Meanwhile, supporters of King Charles has pushed back on the idea that he hated Diana and rejoiced in her death. Royal biographer Angela Levin said Spencer’s comments about Charles were horrible. She said that Charles “always loved” Diana and that he fought to bring her body home from Paris via royal plane.

“Their marriage didn’t work, but that didn’t mean he hated her,” Levin told The Sun. “To portray him as having been so nasty to Diana is horrendous.”

“The King, then Prince Charles, fought to secure a royal plane to bring Diana home,” she added. “That is not a man who couldn’t care less what happened to her.”

But the Earl Spencer insists that he is not lying about Charles’ comments. 

“I can tell you here and now, those are exactly the words he said,” he told the BBC after the palace’s statement.

“I’ve only ever had two calls on the line with Prince Charles at any stage of my life,” he added. “I was hyper alert to what he was saying and those are precisely the words that he said and I promise that to you now. Genuinely, that is what he said. I don’t hear him saying he didn’t say that.”
