Prince William’s Blunt Two-Word Reply Left Prince Harry Stunned Over Meghan Markle
Prince Harry once worried Prince William might not be okay with Meghan Markle joining the family. But William’s reaction was totally different. When Harry told William and Kate Middleton that he was dating Markle, they were reportedly pretty shocked. According to the Express, Harry later talked about the moment in his memoir Spare.
He wrote, “Their mouths fell open. They turned to each other. Then Willy turned to me and said: ‘F–k off?’” Harry said he was baffled at first. He added that William and Middleton then explained that “They were regular – nay, religious – viewers of Suits.”
Markle played Rachel Zane on Suits for seven seasons. So the Waleses already knew who she was. Harry later joked, “I’ve been worrying about the wrong thing. All this time I’d thought Willy and Kate might not welcome Meg into the family, but now I had to worry about them hounding her for an autograph.”
The Duke told William about his relationship with Markle in 2016, before they went public. Later, the two couples had dinner together at Harry and Markle’s place. Markle cooked that night, and Harry said they chatted about Wimbledon and Suits. He also noticed that Markle and Middleton had dressed very differently.
“The only possibly discordant note I could think of was the marked difference in how the two women dressed, which both of them seemed to notice. Meg: ripped jeans, barefoot. Kate: done up to the nines. No big deal, I thought,” he wrote. Markle later shared her side of that night in the Netflix series Harry & Meghan.
She remembered being barefoot and wearing ripped jeans. “When Will and Kate came over, and I met her for the first time, they came over for dinner, I remember I was in ripped jeans and I was barefoot. I was a hugger. I’ve always been a hugger, I didn’t realise that that is really jarring for a lot of Brits,” she said.
The actress added, “I guess I started to understand very quickly that the formality on the outside carried through on the inside. There is a forward-facing way of being, and then you close the door and go ‘You can relax now’, but that formality carries over on both sides. And that was surprising to me.”
During their 2017 engagement interview, Harry said William wanted to meet Markle. “William was longing to meet her, and so was Catherine. So, you know, being our neighbours, we managed to get that in a couple of – well, quite a few times now, and Catherine has been absolutely…”
Markle then finished the sentence, saying, “She’s been wonderful.” Harry also described William as “fantastic support.” For a time, the two couples looked close. The press even gave them the “Fab Four” nickname. However, things changed after that.
It was when Harry and Markle stepped back from royal duties in 2020 and moved to California. Now, after almost six years, the Sussexes have returned to Britain with Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet on August 26. The kids have even started school in the U.K., too.
