Are the Royals Going to Adopt the ‘Bright Tomato Trend’ at Next Big Event?
The British royal family has just wrapped up Trooping the Colour, where we saw some of the “Bright Tomato trend.” Now, we’re wondering if that will carry over to the Royal Ascot.
Here’s what an expert said about that, plus what spectators should never wear to the big racing event.
Nick Ede is a UK-based brand and culture expert and public relations specialist with over 20 years of experience in fashion and entertainment. He is a regular commentator on television and in the press. Alongside his media work, Ede runs a PR agency and is a dedicated charity campaigner, having raised significant funds and awareness for stroke charities through his initiative Style For Stroke. He was also once close friends with Meghan Markle.
Speaking on behalf of Lottoland Live Casino, Ede told Showbiz Cheat Sheet, “Bright Tomato is a very clever choice because it feels confident, joyful and unmistakably British. Ascot is always about celebrating summer, and this shade brings a modern energy to what can sometimes feel like a sea of predictable pastels.
“That said, I don’t think we’ll see people abandoning florals and soft shades altogether. Pastels remain the cornerstone of British summer dressing. Instead, I expect Bright Tomato to be used as an accent color through dresses, millinery, handbags and tailoring, giving traditional Ascot fashion a fresher, more contemporary edge.
He added, “What’s great about Bright Tomato is that it’s bold and can look good in lots of different fabrics, whether that’s structured, fitted dresses or more silky wrap styles. It’s very flattering for all shapes and sizes. You have to be careful about how you accessorise it though, as you don’t want colour clashes or to wear a green hat, as you’ll look like an actual tomato – and no one wants that.”
Ede also shared what fashion mistakes those attending the races could make.
“The biggest mistake is treating Ascot like a wedding,” he said. “Ascot fashion is more polished, more elevated, and far more considered. And also if you are going to be re-wearing something, spend a few weeks styling it up and creating a new look for the big race weekend.
“I’d advise against dresses that are too short, overly revealing necklines, or footwear that’s impractical for a full day on grass. Comfort is just as important as style. If you’re constantly adjusting your outfit, it will show and you won’t enjoy your experience.”
Ede further explained, “For the weather, layers are your best friend. A tailored blazer, elegant cape, or lightweight coat can transform a look while protecting you from sudden showers. The most stylish people at Ascot are usually the ones who look comfortable in what they’re wearing. Elegance comes from confidence, and sometimes less really is more.
“It’s all in the details. Beautiful millinery, impeccable tailoring, gloves, delicate jewellery, and a sense of occasion elevate an outfit beyond wedding guest territory. Think structured dresses, refined prints, heritage-inspired fabrics, and polished accessories. I’d also recommend investing in a quality hat rather than leaving it as an afterthought, it often becomes the defining feature of the outfit, and speak to your friends first and see what they are wearing so you can complement and don’t double up!”
