Sarah Michelle Gellar is mourning the loss of her Buffy the Vampire Slayer co-star Anthony Head.

On Friday, Head’s daughters, Daisy and Emily, announced that he had died at age 72 of complications from pneumonia. Later that day, Gellar took to Instagram to pay tribute to the actor.

“‘Tell Giles I figured it out and I’m ok,’” she wrote, quoting a line her character spoke to Head’s in Buffy’s season 5 finale.

“Well I don’t have it figured out and I’m not ok,” Gellar continued. “But I know I’m the lucky one because I knew you. Thank you to Daisy and Emily who not only shared their dad with me, but with the world.”

Gellar was not the only Buffy cast member remembering Head. David Boreanz, who played the vampire Angel, shared a photo of himself with his arm around his late co-star.

“This is how I met Anthony, in laughter and smile always,” he wrote in the Instagram post. “And this is how I will remember him always. All kindness and a soul that was inspiring to me. Thank you brother . RIP.”

“There’s a hole in the World,” wrote James Marsters, who played Spike, in his social media tribute. “Anthony Head has passed on from us. He was an unflaggingly kind and steady presence on the set of Buffy, and the best actor in the cast. He was the best of us.”

Head is the second major Buffy cast member to die in 2026. In March, Nicholas Brendon, who played Xander Harris, died at age 54. Michelle Trachtenberg, who played Buffy’s sister Dawn, died in February 2025 at age 39.
