Savannah Guthrie was back on Today, business as usual, on Thursday morning. Her presence took some viewers by surprise after Guthrie abruptly left the broadcast without explanation on Wednesday. While the famed co-host didn’t say anything about what prompted her to suddenly leave the air the day before, viewers are speculating that it may have had something to do with her missing mother, Nancy Guthrie. Since her return to the morning show last month, Guthrie has mostly avoided any discussion about her missing mother, and the case appears to have gone cold. Still, rumor has it that the Today staff has prepared a codeword should developments arise while Savannah is live on the show.

Savannah Guthrie and the ‘Today’ cast have a codeword for Nancy news

Savannah Guthrie has reported on thousands of stories during her tenure on Today, but she won’t be reporting on major developments in her mother’s case should they arise while she’s working. According to an insider who spoke to The Daily Mail before Savannah’s return to air, the production team came up with a codeword that would get Savannah off the air quickly.

According to the insider, if the co-host is told she’s needed off set, she’ll know that there has been a major development in her mother’s case. From there, the insider insists, she’ll be pulled into a separate office and another Today employee will report on any breaking news. There is no expectation that Savannah will ever report on her own mother’s case.

Is that what happened earlier this week?

While the production team behind the show has a plan in place should new developments arise during the broadcast, that’s not what drew Guthrie away from the anchor desk on May 6. According to an insider who spoke with Page Six, an unrelated appointment prompted her to leave the broadcast early.

Nancy Guthrie Update: Authorities Confident The Family is Not Involved

There have been no major developments in the case of Nancy Guthrie, who disappeared from her Arizona home on February 1. Nancy was last seen on the evening of January 31, when her son-in-law, Tommaso Cioni, dropped her off at her home at approximately 9:50 p.m. When she failed to appear for a scheduled church livestream the following morning, family members went to check on her, found no sign of her, and called 911 around noon. Her phone and other personal belongings were still inside the home, and bloodstains found at the scene were later confirmed to be Nancy’s. While surveillance footage and DNA have been recovered from the scene, a suspect has not been identified. The case remains open.
