Tennis legend Serena Williams and Meghan Markle might seem like an unlikely pair to become best friends. However, they’ve established a close relationship over the years. They first met at Super Bowl XLIV, when Meghan was in a serious relationship with film producer Trevor Engelson. Williams told Harper’s Bazaar that she and Meghan share a “dry sense of humor” that has resulted in a close bond.

“We both definitely have a dry sense of humor,” Williams told the publication. “I think that’s why we hit it off for no reason at this silly football thing. We were just like, ‘Why are we here? To meet you?’ Apparently, and we’ve been lifelong friends ever since.”

In April 2026, Williams posted a clip to her Instagram Stories showing a gift that Meghan sent her.

“I just got this in the mail from my friend, Meghan,” Williams began, showing a handwritten note to the camera from Meghan’s brand, As Ever. The note stated that Meghan wanted to celebrate Williams for Mother’s Day, as Williams has two daughters. “Her penmanship has always been amazing from the 100 years I’ve seemed to have known her.”

Williams then panned the camera to a long, powder-blue As Ever box with blue flower details.

“She sent me a beautiful box of chocolates from her brand, As Ever,” the tennis pro continued. “You guys should check it out.” Williams then laughed as several chocolates came out of place in the box. “She’s so classy, and I’m just like — look at this. This is nuts. Anyway, the chocolate was beautiful, and it was delicious.” Despite stating that she doesn’t like chocolate, Williams noted that she adored Meghan’s.

Next, Meghan sent Williams scented candles. One contained ginger cashmere fragrance, and another had notes of amber, water lily, and santal. “I love candles,” Williams concluded. “Thank you! I love you!”
