Sydney Sweeney’s Latest Provocative Ad Reignites the Controversy She Can’t Escape
Sydney Sweeney’s controversial sports trading advertisement is back, but with a new twist. The actress, who faced a massive backlash from women in sports across the world, recently dropped yet another clip of her covering her bare body with two footballs. Similar to the previous ad, the clip divided viewers.
The last time, Sweeney dropped almost every piece of clothing to promote the sports betting platform. She asked the viewers, “Think you know sports? Prove it.” She claimed that the platform wanted to show “just sports” with the ad.
A little over a month later, the Housemaid star is back with yet another advertisement. The latest Novig ad begins with Sweeney walking while the camera focuses on her white briefs. She appeared not to wear anything on top and hid her modesty with her wavy blonde locks.
The Christy star then focuses on the camera, saying, “There are grown men making spreadsheets to bet on what color underwear I’m wearing. I mean, I’m flattered.” She continued to grab viewers’ attention toward the prediction markets. Sweeney said, “There’s insider trading on dictators dying and armies of bots manipulating it all.”
“There’s someone sitting in a bathroom stall betting their 401k on a war,” she jokingly added. Sweeney soon came to the point, saying, “And then there are people who just trade on sports.” She then added her slogan from the previous controversial ad and said, “Novig is just sports.”
The clip soon grabbed millions of views on Instagram, with thousands of users sharing their views. An Instagram user wrote, “She’s just enjoying ragebaiting u guys,” referring to the previous backlash. Another user noted, “Love that she doubles down on the hate.” “Here comes the wave of angry people,” a third user announced.
Not all users were immediate fans of Sweeney coming back with another similar ad after facing controversy for weeks. A critic asked, “Why do you have to be n—- to market sports? What’s the correlation?” Another penned, “This is just embarrassing now,” while a third one wrote, “Not everything has to be s——–. Love yourself.” “Shameless,” a fourth user labeled the actress.
In the previous ad, Sweeney posed to play different sports while only sometimes wearing white briefs. According to Hello!, the commercial was labeled as provocative, with sportswomen across the globe criticizing Sweeney. The montage showed Sweeney mimicking sports, including hockey, football, tennis, soccer, golf, and pool, while repeatedly saying ‘sports.’
The ad did not sit well with many female athletes who called out the Immaculate star for s———- sports. Many accused her of undermining women in sports with her ad. On the other hand, many defended the actress for promoting a sports trading platform and not talking about women in sports.
According to Today, Novig addressed the massive controversy over their advertisement in a press release. They announced that Sweeney joined the platform as an equity holder and a strategic partner. “The campaign was about embracing a fun idea,” the actress argued, defending the advertisement.
She continued, “The concept is simple: cut through the noise and put the focus entirely on sports. The campaign brings that idea to life with confidence, humor and a playful edge.”
