Taylor Swift’s Massive Engagement Ring Could Be Even More Expensive Than Expected
Photos from the VMAs provide a more detailed look at Taylor Swift’s engagement ring. The large old mine-cut diamond engagement ring has been photographed extensively. Now, a jewelry expert said that these images have cast new light on how much the engagement ring may have cost.
New photos of Taylor Swift’s engagement ring show new details
Swift’s appearance at the VMAs provided close-up pictures of her engagement ring. Nilesh Rakholia, the founder of Abelini, said that the images showed new detail on the ring.
“We’re also seeing considerably more detail in the gold of Taylor’s engagement ring than you appreciate from a distance, particularly along the shoulders either side of the center stone,” he said.
The ring might have hand-carved detailing, rather than just smooth gold sides. It also appears to have more than just one diamond.
“Rather than being plain polished yellow gold, the shoulders appear to have a textured, almost engraved or hand-carved geometric finish,” he explained. “We would need confirmation from the maker to know exactly which technique has been used, but you can clearly see that the surface has been deliberately worked. There also appear to be small round diamonds individually set into the gold.”
He added that this gives new insight into the ring’s design.
“That makes the engagement ring much more intricate than it initially appears,” he said. “You have an estimated 8 to 10-carat old mine-cut centre diamond, the detailed gold setting around it, worked or textured shoulders and additional diamonds incorporated into the band. Even the areas that could easily have been left as plain gold have been treated as part of the overall design.”
Taylor Swift’s engagement ring could be even more expensive than previously thought
Rakholia said the new photos of the ring make him believe it could be even more expensive than he thought.
“I previously valued Taylor’s engagement ring in the region of $750,000 to $1 million (£570,000 to £760,000), based largely on the estimated 8 to 10-carat Old Mine-cut diamond and custom 18-carat yellow gold mounting. These close-ups give us more information to work with, because we can now see just how detailed that mounting appears to be.”
While the cost depends on a variety of factors, all of the detailing will bump up the price.
“The center diamond will still account for the overwhelming majority of the monetary value, but the textured, potentially engraved or hand-carved gold, the additional diamond detailing and the level of bespoke craftsmanship all add a premium. That means the ring could be worth even more than my original estimate, depending on the exact techniques used in the setting, as well as the colour, clarity and provenance of the center stone.”
Her wedding band could also have a high price point
Photos from the VMAs also show that Swift’s wedding band has more details than previously noted.
“What these photographs really show is that this isn’t simply a gold wedding band with a few diamonds added for decoration,” Rakholia said. “The visible section appears to be built around a sequence of individually set diamonds, and they’re substantial enough that you can clearly distinguish each stone.”
He thinks that this could result in a price tag of tens of thousands of dollars.
“Assuming these are high-quality natural diamonds set in 18-carat yellow gold, I would estimate the wedding band to be worth around $40,000 to $60,000 (£30,000 to £46,000), potentially more depending on the total carat weight, colour and clarity of the diamonds, the complexity of the setting and the maker.”
While it is just a wedding band, there are many intricacies that might result in a higher cost.
“There’s quite a lot contributing to the value,” he said. “You have the gold itself, the combined carat weight of the diamonds, the quality of those individual stones, and the craftsmanship involved in matching and setting them so closely together. When diamonds sit side by side like this, consistency becomes important because differences in colour, clarity or proportion can be much easier to spot.”
