‘The Golden Girls’ Is Making a Comeback, but With a Twist
While plenty of our favorite shows have made comebacks over the years with reboots and remakes, it felt like some series would never return. The Golden Girls was one of those shows. With the main cast members no longer living and the show’s creator insisting a reboot would never be in the cards, fans settled for reruns. Now, though, there’s a way to reconnect with Dorothy, Rose, Blanche, and Sophia. It just isn’t on a television screen. A book series that turned the retired foursome into amateur sleuths is expanding.
The Golden Girls are solving mysteries now
Rose, Dorothy, Blanche and Sophia have been solving mysteries for the last 18 months. In April 2025, Rachel Ekstrom Courage released her first Golden Girls book, Murder by Cheesecake: A Golden Girls Cozy Mystery. The campy mystery felt like it was plucked straight from the beloved series, with Dorothy’s date turning up dead in a hotel freezer and threatening a good old-fashioned St. Olaf-themed wedding.
A second book, Death on the Lanai, followed in June 2026. Like its predecessor, it became an instant New York Times bestseller, and fans have been waiting for more from Courage ever since. It’s coming, and it’s coming quickly, but Courage is tweaking her winning formula.
A solve-along mystery book is on the way
After the success of her first two Golden Girls books, Courage has made a big announcement. Who Ate the Last Slice of Cheesecake? has a planned release date of May 11, 2027, but it isn’t simply a mystery novel. Instead, the book will include 10 solve-along mysteries and recipes. Each mystery is an independent read, and the book will include an answer key.
Courage explained that she wanted to give readers something to enjoy in shorter bursts. The stories can be read in any order alongside the novels. In her Substack post, Courage pitches the book to readers who grew up loving Encyclopedia Brown and Five Minute Mysteries.
‘The Golden Girls’ remains iconic even today
The books are just the latest proof of the show’s staying power. Celebrated during its original run, The Golden Girls has found a new audience in reruns and on streaming platforms. The show’s mix of sharp one-liners, cheesecake-fueled heart-to-heart, and storylines that tackled tough topics with grace and humor helped it connect with audiences far beyond its original demographic.
Sadly, none of the show’s four stars lived to see the girls reborn as detectives. Estelle Getty, who played the sharp-tongued Sophia, was the first to pass away. She died on July 22, 2008, at age 84, after battling dementia. Bea Arthur, who played Dorothy, died less than a year later, on April 25, 2009, after a battle with cancer. She was 86.
Rue McClanahan, who played the sex-crazed Blanche, died on June 3, 2010. For more than a decade, Betty White was the lone surviving Golden Girl. She died on December 31, 2021, just shy of her 100th birthday.
Though none of the original cast is here to see it, we’d like to think they would have enjoyed watching their beloved characters solve mysteries on the page.
