Today, Gwyneth Paltrow is married to Brad Falchuk, which follows her 13-year marriage to Coldplay frontrunner Christ Martin. As for Brad Pitt, paparazzi tends to hound his every relationship, most notably his marriages to Jennifer Aniston and Angelina Jolie, the latter of whom he shares six children with. Yet, Before Pitt and Paltrow went on to meet the other A-listers they would settle down with, the two dated and got engaged. Ultimately, it just wasn’t meant to be.

During an interview with Howard Stern, Paltrow explained that she was “too young” when she dated Pitt; she had much to learn as an individual and places a lot of the blame surrounding their failed relationship on herself. Yet, she is also grateful for the fact that they dated in the mid-’90s, understanding that their split likely would have been more “front page” if it happened today.

Despite the fact that Paltrow and Pitt’s break up managed to snag the cover of the New York Post, they were not bombarded with paparazzi and questions about their inner lives from every possible angle afterward. 

Paltrow has since revealed that she’s relieved she broke up with Pitt when she did, knowing that, today, the public fascination and paparazzi would have been unbearable. As MarieClaire notes, she said: 

“I remember when Brad Pitt and I broke up, it was on the cover of the New York Post and there was no one outside my house. That would never happen today.”

Paltrow explained that she and Cameron Diaz speak frequently about the shift in paparazzi numbers. She said, “Cameron Diaz and I talk about this all the time…We’re like, ‘Thank God in the early ’90s there were [so few] paparazzi.’Thank god.” 

In the early ‘90s, Paltrow and Diaz were up and coming stars dating other up and coming stars, yet they managed to do so without every moment of their waking lives being broadcast — without being hounded by photographers waiting in the wings. 

Inside Pitt and Paltrow’s romance 

Pitt and Paltrow met on the set of Se7en and hit off pretty quickly. Though keeping much of their romantic relationship private, they did get to gush about each other post-engagement. Pitt, at the time, labeled his co-star the love of his life.

Ultimately, Pitt and Paltrow split, with Paltrow later labeling Pitt as “too good” for her. Paltrow later went on to date Ben Affleck (on and off between 1997 and 2000) before eventually meeting and marrying Chris Martin. As for Pitt, he married Jennifer Aniston in 2000.
