“This is such heartbreaking news,” Sweeney wrote on X. “Pat was a rare kind of person—brilliantly talented, endlessly kind, and generous in spirit.”

Sweeney and Muldoon worked together on the iconic soap in the 1990s. He originated the character of Austin Reed in 1992, while she joined the cast as an aged-up Sami Brady in 1993. Their two characters had a complicated relationship, with Sami eventually giving birth to a boy she claimed was Austin’s child after she sexually assaulted him.

“I was so lucky to have worked with him when I first started at Days, he made me feel at ease right away,” the Hallmark Channel star recalled. “He brought his unique charm and humor to work every day. A truly gifted guy, and one who will be profoundly missed.”

Sweeney wasn’t the only Days alum mourning Muldoon. Lisa Rinna, who played Austin’s sister Billie Reed, posted a photo of herself with Muldoon on her Instagram Story, along with a broken heart emoji. Rinna and Muldoon both later appeared together on Melrose Place.

Antonio Sabato Jr., who also appeared in the Fox primetime soap, said on Instagram that he was “heartbroken” to learn of Muldoon’s death.

“A talented actor and a true friend, he brought so much joy to those of us who had the privilege of working alongside him,” he wrote. “His spirit will be deeply missed. RIP my pal brother and just a great guy!”

In addition to Days of Our Lives and Melrose Place, Muldoon appeared in movies such as Starship Troopers and Marlowe, as well as Hallmark’s A Boyfriend for Christmas and Double Scoop and Lifetime’s A Christmas Reunion, Boyfriend Killer, and His Secret Past.

Just two days before his death, Muldoon took to Instagram to share news of a new project that he was executive producing.

“So excited to be a part of this amazing project KOCKROACH directed by Matt Ross starring Chris Hemsworth, Taron Edgerton, Zazzie Beetz And Alec Baldwin,” he wrote. “Filming now in Australia.”

The announcement garnered some words of support from Muldoon’s Starship Troopers co-star Casper Van Dien, who played Johnny Rico in the sci-fi satire.

“Congrats brother,” Van Dien wrote.

“Luv u rico,” Muldoon replied.
