Brittney Griner Files for Divorce from Wife; Who Is Cherelle Griner?
WNBA superstar Brittney Griner has filed for divorce from her wife, Cherelle Griner, after eight years of marriage.
According to court records obtained by People, the Connecticut Sun center filed for divorce in Fulton County, Georgia, on July 30, describing their marriage as “irretrievably broken.”
Brittney stated that the couple has been separated since July 24. She is seeking joint legal custody of their son, Bash, as well as an equitable division of their marital assets while retaining her separate, non-marital property.
Cherelle became well known for working tirelessly and advocating for her wife’s release after Brittney was detained at the Sheremetyevo International Airport outside of Moscow and sent to a Russian prison on drug charges in 2022.
Brittney and Cherelle (née Watson), who tied the knot in 2018, met when they were both students at Baylor University in Waco, Texas. Cherelle graduated in 2014 with a degree in political science and government.
After Baylor, Cherelle attended North Carolina Central University School of Law. In 2022, she graduated cum laude and received her law degree. She is the founder and principal attorney of Griner Law Firm, P.C.
According to her law biography, Cherelle is “committed to pro bono service and community engagement. She has held numerous leadership roles–including 1L Class Body President, Vice President for the Pro Bono Council and Restorative Justice Council, Treasurer of the Black Law Students Association, Teen Court Mentor, and Guardian Ad Litem.”
Before Cherelle, Brittney was married to fellow WNBA player Glory Johnson, with whom she shares twins, Ava Simone and Solei Diem.
