‘Couples Therapy’ Season Premiere: Marjorie and Jason Don’t See Eye-to-Eye on Donald Trump [Exclusive Clip]
Can a politically mixed relationship survive?
In the May 15 premiere of Couples Therapy Season 5, Dr. Orna Guralnik sits down with a pair who have opposing views of Donald Trump. But their issues may run deeper than just a Republican-Democrat divide.
Marjorie can’t understand Jason’s support of Donald Trump
“Don’t get me started about politics,” Marjorie says in an exclusive clip from the acclaimed Paramount+ docuseries shared with Showbiz Cheat Sheet.
“He is, I guess, a Republican,” she continues, referring to Jason, who puts his head in his hands as she speaks. “I don’t understand. We have daughters. I’m a woman. How do you vote and support a man who – however I feel about it – has been convicted of 34 felonies?”
Jason argues that his vote for Trump wasn’t a way to say “screw them” to the women in his life. He’s just drawn to the president’s larger-than-life personality.
“I always liked Trump. Before the politics, back when he was in Home Alone … he’s holding [Mike] Tyson fights at the Taj Mahal. He was a thing, me growing up. And nobody hated him like they hate him now. He was a normal guy,” he explains.
Is communication the real problem for this ‘Couples Therapy’ pair?
Guralnik points out that it’s not unusual for couples to disagree politically. She asks Marjorie and Jason if they can explain what their partner cares about when it comes to politics. Their responses are telling
“She cares about women’s rights and uh, you know, mostly a lot of women’s rights,” he says. “….The gay community. The LGBTQ community. Not that I don’t care about that. Because I still do. But that’s what she stands for.”
Marjorie has more trouble understanding what’s driving Jason’s support of Trump.
“I don’t know? Money?” she says. “He thinks our taxes will go down.”
Jason cuts in. He’s explained what he likes about Republicans, he says. She just hasn’t heard him.
“I’ve said it to you a lot,” he says.
Communication – or a lack thereof – is driving some of Marjorie and Jason’s problems, Guralnik hints.
“You have not really done a very good job of talking about politics,” she says. “Because you don’t know what each other care about.”
