Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s wedding was almost entirely unexpected. After thier engagement, fans assumed they’d get a romantic, traditional wedding ceremony in Rhode Island. Instead, the couple opted for a New York City spectacle inside Madison Square Garden with 1,000 of their nearest and dearest. The surprises just kept coming, including who they chose to officiate the ceremony. Funnyman Adam Sandler took the job, and it was a first for him. As it turns out, though, plenty of celebrities have served as officiants for friends, family, and even fans over the years.

Adam Sandler married Travis and Taylor

Despite decades in the public eye and a career built on playing lovable, oddball characters, Adam Sandler has never taken his talents into the world of wedding officiating, at least until now. The comic was tapped to officiate Taylor and Travis’ wedding, thanks to his friendship with each of them.

While some fans assumed Sandler didn’t know Travis and Taylor until the Eras tour, that doesn’t seem to be the case. He’s praised Swift multiple times, insisting she means a lot to his family. Sandler and Kelce developed their own separate relationship on the set of Happy Gilmore 2, and he was happy to step in to take on the big job. Sandler is actually the perfect person for the role when you think about it; several of his films involve romance and weddings, and he has one of the most enduring love stories in all of Hollywood.

Sandler’s job as the wedding officiant kept the nontraditional theme in place. A statement from Swift’s representative also revealed that the couple skipped a traditional bridal party altogether. “Taylor & Travis did not have bridesmaids or groomsmen,” the statement read. “Instead, her brother Austin Swift served as Taylor’s Man of Honor and Jason Kelce was Travis’ Best Man.”

Adam Sandler isn’t the first celebrity to serve as an officiant

Adam Sandler’s turn behind the altar at Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s wedding may have been a first for him personally, but he’s far from the first celebrity to take on the honor. Over the years, plenty of A-listers have stepped into the role for friends, co-stars, and even total strangers.
