FKA Twigs won a major legal battle this month. The Grammy-winning singer had been at odds with her ex-boyfriend, Shia LaBeouf, over a nondisclosure agreement she signed in 2025. Now that agreement has been voided, leaving her free to tell her story however she chooses, and her attorney is framing it as a win for survivors of abuse.

FKA Twigs filed a lawsuit against Shia LaBeouf in 2020

The saga began in December 2020, when Twigs sued LaBeouf, accusing him of sexual battery, assault, and emotional abuse during their year-long relationship. They dated from 2018 until 2019. LaBeouf denied many of the allegations at the time while acknowledging he had hurt people close to him.

The case dragged on for years before the two settled in mid-2025. The settlement came just ahead of a scheduled trial. That settlement included nondisclosure provisions limiting what each side could say about the other and their time together. The matter appeared to be closed. It did not stay that way for long. Before the year was out, LaBeouf filed a confidential arbitration claim alleging that Twigs had breached their agreement by discussing abuse in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. Twigs did not name her abuser in the interview.

The singer argued that the NDA was unenforceable

LaBeouf’s claim that Twigs violated their agreement had far-reaching effects. In March 2026, Twigs filed a second lawsuit against him, calling the arbitration frivolous. The most important part of her argument was that the nondisclosure provision she agreed to was unlawful and unenforceable.

According to Rolling Stone, her case relied on California’s STAND Act, short for Stand Together Against Non-Disclosure, which bans confidentiality clauses in settlements involving sexual assault, sexual harassment and sex discrimination.

Her suit also noted that although LaBeouf had agreed to drop the arbitration, he still refused to concede that the NDA was unenforceable, which is why she pressed ahead in court. LaBeouf eventually agreed to void the NDA, and Twigs withdrew her complaint once they reached that agreement.

Twigs’ attorney, Mathew Rosengart, said the outcome “completely frees her to discuss her experience, advocate for other women who might be less privileged, and support the charitable causes of her choice.” The singer hasn’t said whether she plans to discuss the relationship now that she’s free to do so.

Shia LaBeouf’s other headlilnes

The legal victory for Twigs comes amid a period of turmoil for LaBeouf. The actor has found himself in hot water several times since moving to New Orleans late last year. The first sign of serious trouble came in February, when he was arrested after a Mardi Gras brawl outside a popular bar.

According to the police report, video showed him shoving one man to the ground and hitting another in the face, possibly dislocating the man’s nose. Onlookers held him until officers arrived. He was initially charged with two counts of simple battery, and a third count was added in March. He pleaded guilty to all three in June.

LaBeouf has also allegedly been causing trouble in the New Orleans neighborhood he now calls home. According to TMZ, a local tennis club closed off a gate to members in March after LaBeouf allegedly harassed several people coming and going from the high-end club. The New Orleans Police Department was involved.

Things have quieted down in recent weeks, and LaBeouf appears to be in a new relationship. Whether things stay that way remains to be seen.
