Soul Icon Gladys Knight Steps Back From Performing as Recent Onstage Behavior Sparks Serious Fears for Her Health
Gladys Knight is taking a step back from performing, and many fans are relieved.
“After much soul searching I’ve decided that I will be easing into fewer performances while focusing on transitioning into the next stage of my career and life moving forward,” the soul and R&B icon said in a statement posted on Instagram on August 28. “I’ll be spending more time on projects with my husband and visiting with my grandbabies and am looking forward to this new era.”
Knight, who is 82, also thanked her fans for supporting her multi-decade career in music, writing that she was “grateful” that her childhood dream of performing came true.
“I hope to see your smiling faces out and about and on the road,” she wrote. “God bless all of you and hope to see you soon.”
“THANK YOU for the many years you’ve given us. You deserve to rest and transition to the next stage of a beautiful career and life,” one person commented.
“You have given us your all. You deserve rest,” another commented. “We love you.”
Fans fear Gladys Knight might be cognitive decline
The seven-time Grammy winner’s statement didn’t specifically mention health issues as a reason for her lightened tour schedule. But her semi-retirement comes amid mounting concern for the “Midnight Train to Georgia” singer’s health.
On August 27, TMZ reported that people close to the singer were “deeply concerned” about her health, especially after a July 25 performance at the Hollywood Bowl. Footage from that performance seems to show the Motown star confused and disoriented on stage.
Worries that Knight might be cognitive decline have been simmering for months. In a recent Reddit post, a fan said they had attended her concert in Raleigh, North Carolina, in early July and came away convinced she was not well.
“She was pretty clearly in cognitive decline,” they wrote. “She looked great, moved great, and sounded great, when she was actually singing. But she kept, literally, wandering around stage.”
Another person said they’d seen Knight perform in Houston and Detroit and witnessed a similar scene.
“She still sounds incredible, but she can’t remember all the lyrics and cues and doesn’t seem aware that it’s her show sometimes,” the wrote.
Singer’s son worries his mother is being forced to perform
Last year, Knight’s son, Shanga Hankerson, accused his mother’s current husband, William McDowell, of elder abuse.
“The band played about two or three extra bars,” Hankerson told The Shade Room in August 2025 when describing one of her performances. “And she zoned out. The background singer started singing… and that brought her back. They’re having to rewind the teleprompters because my mom is forgetting to even look at them.”
Knight married McDowell in 2001; he now serves as her manager. Her son believes McDowell is pressuring his mother to perform.
“Not knowing where she is, not knowing where William is, is a big [trigger] for her, and that’s my biggest issue because he manipulates that to the fullest and not in a good way… She’s being made to think that she needs to work,” he said.
In a statement, Knight disputed her son’s claims.
“I’m sorry that my health and performances have been misrepresented,” she said in a statement to ABC News. “I want my fans and those concerned to rest assured I am doing very well.”
