How to Get Hailey Bieber’s Glossy Black Nails
At the recent Academy Museum Gala in Los Angeles, Hailey Bieber wore her nails in a glossy black color. This is a growing trend, with searches skyrocketing over the past year. Here’s what to ask for if you want the look ahead of Halloween.
Hailey Bieber complemented her pink dress with black nails
At the Academy Museum Gala, Bieber wore a pink Chanel gown and a dark manicure. Nail artist Zola Ganzorigt created the look, which featured almond-shaped nails painted with OPI Intelli-Gel in Black Onyx. This is part of a growing trend. Analysis by Fresha, the world’s leading booking platform for beauty and wellness, found that “glossy black nails” increased by 1,397% over the past year, with an estimated 4,000 searches in the past month.
Beauty expert Danielle Louise said that anyone wanting to get the look for themselves should show a stylist an image of the nails.
“Showing your nail professional a photograph is much more useful than simply asking for black nails,” she said. “An opaque, glossy manicure looks very different from a sheer black, a matte finish, or a dark shade with shimmer. Be specific about which part of the photograph you like.”
The beauty of this nail color is that it is a statement in itself.
“You can wear glossy black with a simple outfit and let your nails be the detail, or use it to contrast with something softer, such as pink or cream,” Louise said. “It also works across Halloween and party season without needing a themed design.”
Louise also noted that while Bieber wore her nails in an almond shape, this color can also work with shorter nails. Still, she noted that the shape and application matter just as much as the color.
“With a solid black manicure, the outline is a big part of the look,” she said. “An even shape, neat edges, and a smooth, glossy finish are what make it feel polished. You do not need to add glitter or extra length for it to work for an evening out.”
For those who liked Bieber’s look but aren’t sure about committing to an inky black manicure, there are other dark shades that work well as well.
“Deep burgundy, espresso and inky navy can look almost black in some lighting, but the undertone becomes more obvious in daylight,” Louise said. “Ask to see the colours on a sample nail rather than choosing from the bottle alone.”
In addition, you should check to see how the shade looks against your skin tone.
“There is no rule that you have to choose a particular dark shade for your skin tone,” she said. “Compare them against your hand and choose the contrast you actually like.”
